Lazy Daze catch report 4/3/11

Arived and launched at Cullercoats 9-30am nearly low water, only to find boat battery flat, (again), so after nipping home for another battery, knackered already charging up and down the beach and such, finally got on the move. Went straight to a wreck, suspecting no fish around yellow can. Tried a few drifts over using a shad on a flowing 5ft trace, but no takes. Decided to anchor over the wreck and bingo, a pouting on lugworm. Dropped down again, waited a few minutes and this time a solid pull down, struck and was into a better fish which turned the scales at 6lb-10ozs. 10 mins latter a boat pulled along side, Wor Lass from the Royal Quays marina, had a little chat saying he had been fishing around yellow can, but not even a bight. Said he heard The Jester calling me on channel 6. Sorry Chris, I was on 8 at the time, did give you a few shouts on 6 but not sure if i'm getting out as far as Sunderland, even on full power.
He then went further out to another wreck so I continued fishing still at anchor. About 15mins latter, another good pull down with another nice fish kicking and bucking and taking line which weighed 7lb-14ozs.
Ended up with 6 fish to take home.
Have to say, the Sonik sk3 8-12lb rod was superb used with an older Shimano 4000lx fixed spool loaded with 40lb braid. Fished all day without a coat and was quite pleasant. Back in by 2-30. a nice start to the early season.:):) Some pics of the day

Well done Arthur :), see the camera is out again. I was out ( Well, in and out ) but it was'nt me on the radio, it might have been the lad who bought the jester off me. I :)think the wrecks are doing better than the rough ground at the moment...

Yeh Rich, can hardley believe how poor it is round that area but, another week or two could be a lot better:rolleyes:

Cracking quality fish there Arthur, how were you anchored on the wreck position wise? At the front, right on top or at the back end? Just curious as if there's nowt on creswell skeers when we put growler back in the water the anchor will be getting wet!

Graham.

who can:question: the canman can:exclam::exclam::exclam:(catch fish) well done you have everyone "champing at the bit now":exclam::exclam:

Hi Graham, I use a light grapnel home made anchor which just bends the flukes straight using the outboard but only works on sand when the tide isn't pulling hard. If i anchor uptide or up wind after going over the wreck, say 50 metres, paying out rope till the wreck starts showing on the sounder, secure at that and start bait fishing using a rotten bottom on the sinker. Yesterday at one stage I was moored right on top, just the way it worked out.
Sometimes the fish are slightly uptide of the wreck, and sometimes above, just seems to depend on tidal flow on the day.

Seems that way Chris, when i was finished on the wreck yesterday, i went inshore with 2 rods out, gave it an hour but not a sniff,:( but come early April, they usually just appear as if from nowhere.:)

Yes Arthur, i remember going out last April, first time solo, just fishing close in on the rough and not expecting much, but had a good couple of hours, 8 fish to 7lb. You mentioned you had the SK3, used mine yesterday, really nice action and light too....:)

Well done Arthur they’re a fine pair of fish at any time of the year. I didn’t do any better after chatting to you and heading off to try another four or five wrecks. No coddling, only small scotchies to rag, squid and a handful of frozen peeler.
It was still a successful day; great sea conditions and a chance to give the boat a good start of season run and charge the batteries. Things can only get better and become less patchy.

Sorry about any confusion calling Jester, I must have heard you calling him but was only half listening, I remember the two boat names anyway though.

Hi Kevin, I hadn't realised it was you out there:confused: obviously my brain was out of gear.yeh, it was nice out there, shame there wasn't much about. It will get better very soon:rolleyes:

Cheers for that info Arthur, I spent most of yesterday with a stinking hangover scraping the old antifoul off Growler! I had a renewed vigour after the recent catch reports even after 12 cans of stella! All going to plan we should be back in the water this weekend, I am up to clean an polish during the week and antifoul primer/undercoat, new antfouling on saturday and the engines are already serviced and ready to go, just need some cod! A trip to Sweethope tomorrow so maybe some rainbows in case the cod don't show next week!

Graham.

Might be just as barren up sweethope as it is at sea:eek: Is sweethope open this early?
