Lead making

Just a quick question to the lads who make their own leads. I have been making some small 10g barrel leads for the summer but I am having difficulty tidying up the tag from where the lead has poured in, how do you do it?
On my larger weights I just snip it with my side cutters but the remaining bit on the smaller ones sticks out quite a bit.

if its what im thinking,put ,example,piece of wire though barrel lead,then you can say steady lead with thump,then trim top the bottoms of lead,that way knife ends up hitting wire,and your fingers are safe. tight lines.

Not quite Reg. I finally managed to get myself the barrel lead mould and the largest one is 10g. They are quite delicate and it is the bit that you snap off where the lead has poured in that I am having trouble tidying without distorting the finished lead. Most of the ones I see for sale look really neat and streamlined, which is what I want.

I use a pair of pliers and twist it off.

If it is in the same place all the time it could be a low spot on the mould and a few taps with a hammer on the inside edge of the area where you are getting flash may fix it. But saying that if the mould is too hot the same thing can happen.

If the mould is not flat in a small area you can raise the lip of the mould in that area by deforming the edge with a flat faced hammer pulling it towards you as it strikes the mould. You sort of stretch the edge up.

I think we're at crossed purposes here mate. I need to cleanly remove the tag where the lead pours in. The bit that you normally twist or cut off on the larger leads.

i always used to use a pair of pincers then a small chisel to tidy it up if i was selling them

Thanks for all of the replies lads. I was half expecting someone to say add a bit of such and such to your lead and it will make it a little more brittle and the "sprue" will just snap off tidy
Looks like I'm just going to have to take my time and dress them as best I can.

ive always used either a stanley knife or some wire snips

i get mine from " dusty bin " saves all the faff on ... you lose em i find em , he melts em down
