Leadheads.

Never used these before but read up on them via this forum.
I understand the principal of them but is the head to light to sink to the bottom.
In a heavy tide surely it would lift right off.
I can also understand why they are sometimes more effective than jiggers.
Going to buy a couple before my next boat trip and give them a whirl. Some goods ones in NE Tackle. (big mackeral jelly bodies to attach to the lead head.)

Unless you are fishing in shallow water or bang on slack water you will need to use a lead along with the lead head.

I have used lead heads for years, i remember standing on the boat time and time again having the pee taken about using lead heads in the north sea..now loads of people use them.

Anyway i use a 2-3oz fish shaped lead head with a DIY plastic boom with a 6-8oz lead on the bottom. I use around 2-4ft of leader...all depends on how many are on the boat and the knots your drifting at.

Last thing you want is to snag up everyone on a charter trip every drop with a massive leader.

I have had some fantastic fish on lead heads, cod,ling, catfish,mackerel,coalie,whiting, haddock and a flouder once lol.

I also add a tiny and i mean tiny strip of mackerel to tempt the ling abit more. If you do this make use you use a strong leader as the ling just roll and destroy your leader with there teeth.

Trust me i know first hand

Best thing you can do is do a search for lead heads on the net to get a good pic of some methods of setting them up.

With wreck fishing i say keep it all sinply and keep it cheap.

By the way i find the tiger tails in orange out fish every other lure going, tried everythign ont he market now and fishtek send me there latest lures all the time to try out.

The lumi fishtek lures come next followed by the blue and orange shads.

I'd go with most of what richy says, orange twin tails seem to outfish everything else, but others do have their day.

I've used 10 and 12oz leadheads straight through as well, can't get much simpler than that!

Mick, I've got **** loads of them in the shed if you want to try a few cheap ones.

Bought the mould, got the lead at a very good price of Keith, bought a box full of twin tails, then sold the bloody boat.

Give me a shout and I'll let you have a few cheap to try out.

Them were the days Marc, that lead was 33p per kilo from the scrappy by smiths docks if I remember rightly. Wanna sell it back?

All that I'd add is use a good quality boom.

I've tried lots and the only one that I found worked without a single tangle no matter how long the trace is the Mustad Flying Collar Boom, (I use anywhere between 12 and 20ft of trace depending on water depth and tide). A little pricey but if fished right you shouldn't loose many at all. Lure presentation is better as well.

I only use these to fish for Cod and Pollock.....I do not go after Ling with these so I tend to use a 15/20lb Amnesia trace line with the clutch slackened off a little.

I have done quite well on the blue storm shads but struggled on the green and black ones.

Maybe its time to try the orange ones.

Give em a go mick...you have nothing to loose. One of the problems a lot of anglers come across is that if they try something different and dont catch in 15 mins they will go back to what they have always done as they have faith in it. Even though they dont catch on what they normally use they have confidence that they will catch eventually so are notprepared to stick with new methods.

Anyone who has fished with me will confirm I tend to be unconventional with my approach to fishing and some days it pays off and some days I blank...either way I love my day out..i will try it ..if it doesn't work...i'll give it another go untill it does.

Just my opinion andif you want to try a day sometime doing it differently just PM me and I will be happy to take you out.
