letter from david miliband

The same mob that have let the commercials run wild, pillaging our seas for profit, now want money of us to pick up the scraps left after years their idiotic mismanagement.

Totally out of order

Like moocher says its all in there including bait collection, bag limits, no take zones, closed areas (including anglers). The licence seems to be the one thing that got everybodies backs up but there is a lot more in there than that.

If after years of ignoring scientific advice on cod stocks and allowing the commercials to carry on unchecked and at times (like in my hometown of Whitby) land huge amounts of black fish then it would be absolutely rediculous to turn around and say to anglers "right were restricting your catches". But its possible and the marine bill will give them the powers to do so.

this is the start of a government push to control anyone who has the urge to use the sea for recreation-they will even tell us which paths/tracks we can walk on which beach. As a sea angler I am not willing to pay for a license for my sport-because I feel I will not get any value for my hard earned cash.
My sport does cost me alot of money a year and it is spent in various local tackle shops acquiring tackle, I also pay quite abit for my boat to be moored at Amble marina-there is also further outlay with fuel costs etc.
I personally think I pay a high price to participate in the sport I love.
I also think it is a real shame that the folks that care and respect the seas, angling etc have not got a real say in whats gonna happen or what has happened in the past-after all these *******s think that we are plebs, only sea angler's who have'nt got a clue ( maybe we have'nt??) If we were Salmon anglers would they listen any harder?
Mr Miliband has the right to try and push this paper through,I have the right to tell these people "Told me to buy a license, I said NO NO NO!)

Just had a good old debate over a few jars in the local with harra on this one, the government have threatened for years to bring in the license for sea anglers but it has never happened, either they wernt serious enough about it or it was too hard to enforce. For me the main reason for not bringing this in is due to the fact that they could not feasibly enforce such a system, they have not got the man power to physically check licences. For instance, like PENN525 said, can you imagine a government official going to the beach/rocks at 3am in the middle of a raging northerly at some obscure mark just to check if you had a license? I for one dont think that would happen, when was the last time you saw anyone checking to see if a lobster(or crabber) was only taking the correct size, or an angler getting fined for taking undersized fish? IT DOES NOT HAPPEN! How can they even think of bringing this bill in, our government is yet again living in cloud cuckoo land.......or maybe they just want votes?

Jamie

Well Said Mate. Yes We Did Have A Debate Over This In The Pub And We Spoke To Daren Aswell And We All Came To The Same Conclusion And That Is Bleeep Bleeep Bleeep Bleeep

As per usual the government think they can ride roughshod over us mere mortals, lets show them that they cant! Maybe if the angling fraternity had made a stand years ago the we might not be in this mess now!

like the uprated four wheel drive road fund, vehicle tracking , banning smoking in public places its going to happen, make no bones about it, the choice is drive your head in the sand and imagine it wont happen or get behind a common banner and shaft them back, the only way you are going to win is to be a real threat to any govenment party, how many anglers are there ??, you need someone to make it known that if they want to f*** us about then they are going to get the same in return, however if as normally happens in blighty its a dog with no teeth then we are all going to get laughed at, any party that wants to be voted in will promise you a night in bed with the the virgin mary if it would get your vote, once in you know that all those promises will be cast aside, look at labours track record alone on failed promises and hidden taxes, left to thier own devices we will get all these promised ` anglers perks` when there are no more fish to be plundered, however we will be penalised if we cast into the sea without that magic piece of paper, once its in place then i can see a big push to prosecute as many unpaid anglers as they can to show resolve, ok after the intial 6 months it may all die down a bit but by then lots of people have fines to pay, they dont have to come to some godforsaken rockmark, a wheel clamp will do, theres plenty of private clamping companies out there, we are talking a govenment body, like the police, before they pull you over they know if your cars taxed -insured and who should be driving it, computers wonderfull things, it would not take much to see if the car parked up at a fishing mark has the owner with a licience, a comp , hello theres mister fisheries person, you want to book in, no licience, sorry mate, then you get the private clubs , like seahams pier lads, they pull the memberships and check that the club has made sure , and possibly the club gets a hit for having unlicienced members, bit like a pub manager getting it for underage drinkers, if this is a stealth tax as many fear then the govenment will go to any lengths to get it, personally i have signed to say stuff your licience, however that now means that they know who i am and where i live

to be honest, how do they think they are going to police this. And even if they try, will that not cost more than the money they will make from the licences?
And yet again!!!!!! the only people that will lose out will be the 'honest man' :(

Jamie there have been a few prosecutions AND RIGHTLY so of people taking undersize lobtsers from Boulmer over the past few months. Don't know who's shoppped them but I saw some lad bout two years back who'd been down and had 6 or so in a bucket and not one of them was size. Doesn't take an idiot long to realise where these people are going to head for lobsters and crabs. Boulmer has become awash with people coming up in the summer to take advantage of the shellfish there, you can see them all over the rocks or wading around the Marmouth with buckets, hands in the water up to their shoulders looking under rocks and weed, often they cover them with a few inches of willicks to try and hide them. But some one has obviously been watching coz as I've said there have been two prosecutions in the local paper over the past few months of lads from Sunderland/Newcastle
Obviously as I've mentioned in previous posts about the state of the worm digging there in the winter numerous cars I've seen down there are uninsured and are digging both tides over the day 5-6 days a week. So really if any fisheries officer with a decent knowledge of where and when people may be can target those doing anything illegal and contact the police.
If it sorts the wheat from the chaff and something is done to protect fish stocks and prevent overfishing, prevent over collection of bait species then I've no problem paying for a licence.

well i have kept quiet long enough:), my own personal opinion is that this like so many other white papers this one will never materialize. it just could not be done, can you imagine the man power and resourses used to police the whole of coastline and can you emagine council employees walking up and down our coast in the middle of the night or the winter, christ you cant even get them to work past 12 noon on a friday. plus if we as anglers ALL!!!! stick together and say sod it, what can they do??????. but like i said i cant see it working.

cheers

like i said if us anglers stuck together and just said no if a licence was to come in we might just stand a chance???

oh and i have sent my signature to the petition:)

When you consider that countries within Europe already have an angling licence and some countries in the world with bigger coastlines already operate a successful sea angling licence the Government have existing models to copy.

i have read every post on this debate. the same thing,s are being said now as 4 years ago at the start of the debate about hunting with dogs. ie it will not work etc..there are people out there that will shop you ie anti blood sport git.s with nothing better to do.......
