Far as i am aware mate, its NOT a free stretch, it belongs to the swalwell angling club, you need a fresh water (rod) licence, you also have to join swalwell club to fish it or get a day ticket if they are available, i was once under the impression it was a free stretch, until i got told different

That bit's Axwell Park and Derwent Valley AA water, which ends at the Swalwell road bridge. (I don't think that section's tidal either, as there's another weir a bit further down, I believe.) As I understand it, the shortish section that runs past the allotments below the Swalwell road bridge down to the Tyne is free though. Or at least, I'm pretty sure it's not controlled by any clubs anyway.

Either way, you'd need an EA rod licence to fish it. (And maybe a permit too!)

hope this is of use.

Probably mute point now, needing a Licence has nothing to do with fishing in freshwater, sal****er or tidal water, it's to do with fishing for 'Freshwater Fish' you can in theory be prosecuted for fishing without a license 6 miles off shore if for some reason it's deemed you are fishing for freshwater fish (mad but true).

Also as a point of note, if you are fishing for freshwater fish it's not your word vrs the EA bailiff, it's the EA Bailiffs say so if your gear is targeting freshwater species or not, there is no arguing the toss, they have heard every excuse under the sun and they do know what maggots are for ;)
