life jackets

Arthur, as Richy mentioned the RNLI will do a free life jacket check for you. They were at the RQ marina last year and the majority of the jackets they checked had something wrong with them; some serious, some less so. The RNLI site also have a guide somewhere on their website about checking them.

I take mine home, open the Velcro and inflate them with a bile or car pump; remember how they were packed before you inflate or unroll them! Leave them for 24 hours to check they don’t leak. Check all the straps, webbing and battery for the strobe if fitted. Check the firing mechanism is intact and in date. Check the cylinder condition weight then remember to screw it back in place. I’ve seen a few recommendations for this site Lifejacket spares and accessories selling replacement parts.

Thanks for all the imfo lads. Thanks Rch and Trev, I'll wait for your call for when the RNLI to come to the RQ and get them checked, cheers.

Thats not your 645 for sale at the marina is it Kev? seen it today 21k

No chance Richy :) Coincidently, that boat was for sale a few years ago when I was looking to upgrade from a seahog. I had a look around her and thought she was a great boat but wanted a newer one. Every other boat on the pontoon is an Ocqueteau now, they are as popular as the Arvors.

Out of interest, which insurance company do you use? Mine restrict cover to something like “territorial waters” which usually means 12 miles but they don’t define so when I’ve asked them, they agree to include offshore trips out and back from the RQ. Most of our trips are within the 12miles limit anyway although one summer’s day, when a big high pressure settles in with calm weather, and a few other boats are willing to join the party, I’ll head out and give the graveyard a try.

I used to fish 30 miles offshore hired a liferaft from young's N Shields pleased I didn't have to use it :) did a survival course I had to right a upturned raft and climb in I was only about 30yrs old and fit was still knacked had to pull the oldies like me in they couldn't make it
