Lighting for night fishing

I was just wondering what sort of lighting people use for night fishing. I've never really done any fishing at night and would like to get out over the winter season after work or fish into the darkness at a weekend and wasn't sure what was needed. Do people get away with just using head torches or do you need a lantern too (presuming there are no street lights etc about). Any particular makes / style which are generally considered better than others?

Thanks for your time

Gary

I got a Tilly lamp for nowt off freecycle and think its great although some knock them for the more preferable gas ones but theirs something nostalgic about a Tilly that warms you in more way than one (pie on top)

I used to use an old Tilly lamp which was great since you could also warm your hands over it but a chore to initially light, but now I just use a cap lamp since I tend to move around rather than stay in one spot plus it's easier than carrying a lamp around.

Hi Gary, most people just use a head light now but a few still use lamps. I have a couple of Tilley lamps from years ago and as Lee says they were great for warming your hands during a cold night. I would never use a lamp of any sorts on the rocks though as they will form big shadows. You can't see past them and they also hide holes which you could easily step into. I also think they can be a menace to anyone else fishing close for the same reasons unless you keep them beside your box so they are not shining in other peoples eye's.

There are many different headlights, some very powerful and some that just give a small blue light. They will all do for baiting up but I prefered a decent light for rock fishing. I would just find a cheap one to start with and then have a look at others when you are out.It always pays to have some sort of back up if you are fishing very dark rock marks, as bulbs or battery's can go very easily, leaving you stranded and not being able to see at all lol. Not very nice on some marks. You will get lots of reccomendations from different people but take your time and actually have a look at different lights before you decide to buy. That will save you having to upgrade once or twice and a lot of money lol.

Jim.

As Jim has already said it is wise to always have a backup.
I started with a cheap Ron Thompson battery powered head light for £10, I now keep this as a spare. My main one is now a Speleo Catchmaster rechageable which is excellent value at £60.

night light

also just got a lenser h7 but not the rechargeable type, and been out 6 times with it on most of the time and its still quite bright with the same batteries . and like the lads say get back up one as well

I used to have a Tilly lamp that i gave away on Freecycle.
Mainly cos i could never light the bloody thing.
Now i find a decent head light does, less rubbish to carry

The lads are right about having a back up light-essential.
I have a shakespear halogen bulb headlight which has a rechargable pack. Lat Sunday when fishing at Hendon the bttery ran out of power. Fotunately i had my back up light a pretzel. I got the light recently when i took out a subscription with the sea angler mag again for a year. The light was worth £20 and is excellent.
Its about how much sh--e do you need to carry. I swear my box must be over 6 stone when loaded up for a good sesh.
dozen wieghts, rigs, spare lines,2 reels, knife, scissors, flask, sarnies ,pop, etc.two lights in a snadwhich box is ample lighting.
mick.

I also have a tiga SL85, i put off spending loads on a headlamp for ages before i finally pulled out the hard earned. Ive got to say i wouldnt/couldnt go back to a normal led one now.

I would probably suggest get a reasonably cheap led one to see if you like night fishing then move up if you decide its something you want to do. You can always keep the led one in your box as a back up or strap it to your rod rest to shine on your rod tip so it wont be wasted.

Cheers fellas,

Really appreciate the replies. I'm sort of pleased that everyone is suggesting headlamps, it suits me much more as I'm very much a travel light sort of person no mater what fishing I'm doing.

i have a coleman northstar tilley, has its own ignition etc.
that comes out in the dead of winter, normally around my seat box to bait up etc.

i have a spelio fx3 or whatever it was for the headlamp and a spare small led headlamp as a back-up, im thinking of getting a samalite headlamp as the spelio is well over 10yr old now and a wee bit dull compaired to some newer headlamp.

like most things, you get what you pay for ;D

This is the one I use, a Petzl myolite 3, it's a hybrid xenon halogen bulb and led's.

The reason I got this was mainly due to the fact that it's very light weight for a hybrid, and it was cheap at £28.99.:)

The halogen has a range of 76m while the led's have a range of 25m.

Battery life is approx. 4 hours of constant running for the halogen, 130 hours for the led's.

The halogen is perfect for walking to and from places, while the led's are excellent for baiting up.

Before deciding on anything if I were you I would go into a camping shop and ask to see some working, I did this when I was down south and they allowed me to test four while in a dark cupboard.

Good luck and tight lines.

P.S. Regarding back up lights, I think I go over the top (I have two built into my tackle box an extra led head lamp a mini mag lite and a small keyring led) but it's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.:)
