Used them as a kid. Were not up to much then. Think the same still applies. Have not seen any used. When you think about it they are a very hardy type of creature. I do not think many fish could rip them off the rocks.

Mick.

get them outa there shells and leave them out side till there stinking
cracking bait from the boat cod love them
id guess they will work in the winter just the same from the shore

Are there great numbers of Wrasse in the north east? I've caught them on the south coast - but have never really thought of them as a northern fish for some reason...
Any deep water rock mark could hold Wrasse, places like The Point at Beadnell,Torrs at Boulmer,Dunstanburgh Castle area, trial and error mate best bet is to look for a likely spot during a very big tide at low water, make a note of it and head back with your gear.

A few years back on holiday at the top of Scotland went fishing one evening at Durness. No bait so had to see what I could find on the rocks/shore - limpets. Kicked a few off and carefully cut them out of their shells intact and lightly attached them to a 2/0 hook ensuring "the guts" (the dark bit) was not burst. Result - a nice red rock codling ranging from about 1 1/2 to 2lb about every third cast. Got around 4 of them in 2 hours. So - worth trying if they are there and not much is happening?

honest if you leave them outside till there stinking they will catch fish i promise
thats from boats lol
that's kinda like Jims theory with the Mussels....they must work with some fish. I'm going to Wales in the summer and I'm gonna fish the beaches - but I'm also going to target some rock marks...Limpets could be an option
