Proper stumpy codling that is, it almost looks as though someone's photoshopped' the half and body of a 8lb cod and merged it with the tail of a 2lb'der!! Really mad looking... !
Been watching this article with interest. Caught a lot of these stumpy cod on the west coast usually at about this time of the year. When you fillet them they have an obvious deformity in the spine bone which seems to prevent normal extension as the fish grows- its obvious from the kink in the lateral line you can see in the photos. Many years ago I asked a fisheries expert about these and was told that it is a 'spontaneous' deformity in cod. This can't be the case since we've encountered small shoals of them so they are a sub species? certainly not the odd rogue fish.
Anyway still worth catching and the important thing is you can fry a fillet from a large stumpy in quite a small frying pan!
