Live Bait

again prompted by Sea Angler...;)

Has anyone used the tactic up here with any success?

They were using a small hook-large hook pennel type set up...the small hook being baited to entice something small to take the bait and the large being left free to hook the biggun when it snaffles the livebait...

I suppose you could try it if you were fishing with two rods but to be honest if you were out for a nights fishing with just one rod would you try it Tony?

Jim.

I saw some bloke using this tactic when I was a kid and have also talked to a lot of older anglers who have used this tactic. Best to use a little bit mackrel on the baited hook as cod quite like whiting. Worth a shot

Lol Paul, I know not to use Rockling for bait then as you are clearly an expert mate. :D :D

You could be right Mog but personally I would rather put out some nice juicy Lug with some Crab or Mussel and take my chance with that lol.

Me too Jim. I know this method was used a lot a few years ago but there used to be a lot more fish around then aswel. It's hard enough catching a fish now never mind 2 on the same rig lol

I used this method at the green wall about 5 year ago. It does work, i had 2 cod this way 7lb and 9lb 7oz, but that was over a whole winter season. I also had cod about 3-4lb that would happily take a whole whiting. At the same time my second rod would catch much more, and more frequently. Big baits dont always mean big fish im afraid.

Yes it does work, many years ago when Balcary and Colvend were the hot spots for big cod this was one of the methods used and was successfull at times.

I have no doubts it would work, especially with loads of big fish about Terry, I think I would still stick with the fresh lug and Crab or Mussel though mate, especially around our coast lol.

Jim.

I have to say i am with you on that one, cant beat a bit of lug or crab n mussel cocktail, but that method did catch some of the bigger fish at Balcary and Colvend.
