long lines

In the pub last night i heard to lads talking about putting a long line out on the beach if the sea comes away is it illegal or legal to do this as anyone tried it if so what results did you get

I don't think its aloud on public beaches because of the hazard it can cause but I may be wrong which beach was this

Long lines not illegal mate done well with this method on the hall beach when water away and big tides (limpet,mussell,parp,runny down all work well.

Most people do it in the dark mate if anyone see's you putting them in theyll be there before ya and rob your catch

It comes in red and sometimes green pull them off rocks hoy in tub then let them rott for a couple of days outside (try next to featherbed rock area theres loads youll nar when ready to freeze just smell them

Years ago loads of lads(me included) put Longlines or Trots(a single snood attached to a piece of wood and buried in the sand as an anchor) on the Hall beach.
Always put in on making tides(tides that are getting bigger).No good putting them in on tides that are getting smaller as you might not get to them on the next low water.Trots were better as they didn,t pick up as much rubbish as a Longline.
As for people getting injured with them,they were usually set at night.

Any bait will do.

Surely people only do it if its purely for eating purposes and not the sport. Anything small/undersize on the hooks will be dead by the time you get to them also.

The fish caught were for eating,no sport involved.
We usually used 4/0 hooks to target Cod when there was a decent sea running and very rarely had undersize fish,there were a hell of a lot more Cod about then.This was the late 60,s and early 70,s...

still popular in shetland in certain areas

Its the only type of commercial fishing thats allowed in the inshore waters around Norway.
Thats why they still have decent Cod stocks.

sets like rubber and the fish car'nt pull it off, most fish will still be alive when checked after the tide.

Alright mate a couple of my mara's still use this method from there boats out of seaham marina and get some canny results
