Just back from a cracking weeks self drive boat fishing to Loppa in northern Norway. Third time up there and 2nd time in this area Situated in the far west of finnmark, the area is awkward to reach and along with the three flights, a 2 hour bus ride and 2 hour ferry journey are required to get you there.
I travelled up alone, Newcastle - Amsterdam, Amsterdam - Oslo, kip in Oslo airport then morning flight from Oslo - Alta. Met the lads at the airport who had travelled the day before and stayed overnight in alta.
Finally reaching the digs at 1.00pm

Shown to our boat and on the water. With us all being shattered we fished close by taking cod to 15lb and haddock to 10lb.

Back to the digs for a few beers and an early night.
Next day we headed down the fjord and over to the west of loppa island. The area was wicked with big cod, mainly 10lb to 25lb, with a few bigger ones to 43lb.

This carried on the next couple of days with loads of cod to 35lb. Fishing was cut short on the 4th day, as I managed to get a 10/0 trebble through the hand well past the barb:o. we went to see our host, Tor, who seemed to enjoy the task in hand (no pun intended:)) of pushing the hook out the other side, before snipping the barb and pulling the hook back out.
Bandaged up, me and the lads fly fished of the jetty infront of our house taking coalies to 3lb

We had a full day fishing the shallows for halibut,....but didnt catch any! we were treated to a cracking sunset though!

Later that night, and the highlight of the trip for me was watching the northern lights. Absolutely stunning, with the lights seemingly appearing as green smoke flickering out of the mountains. As it doesnt get pitch black at this time of year the lights arn't as vivid as in the winter and my shiote camera couldnt pick them out:mad:
Next day we had a good day fishing west of kalven taking some nice coalies to 10lb midwater, and loads of good cod to 40lb.

Our last day, we fished the mouth area of frakfjord and the area was shoaled up with huge cod, there were some monsters down there and we were cursing 15 to 20lb fish. I had a huge fish on, easily my biggest of the week almost to the surface after a 10 min struggle in 100m, when the snap link straightend out:o and the fish was gone. Looking down into the water the white underside of a huge cod could be seen 5m down or so, before it dissapeared!
We still managed good fish to 45lb, and our only halibut of the weighing around 15lb.

So thats about it, excellent fishing, fantastic company! We could have fished harder, but prefered a good drink and a chill out on the nights. Roll on next year, got more pics, mainly scenery if anyones interested.
Tight lines.

Fantastic report, its one amazing area that and seems to get better rather than worse each year based on the reports and your report is up there with the best of them.

How long did it take you to get there? it took us 16hrs lol

Very well done, what did you get most the big cod on? we found silver pirks, storm shads and savage redfish worked well.

What a cracking report ,something that you will remember for a very long time. Many thanks for sharing pics, looks fantastic
cheeers.

Just shows you what can happen when a country controls its assets and fishing rights.
Good old greedy Briton take note.

I posted in one other thread on here if anyone wants any help for that part of Norway i have got loads of info for months of reading up happy to share as it was no easy thing to sort from scratch.

Anyboy who asks is it worth going that way just look at the lads post well worth it, amazing area, air, 24hr light some of the year, monster fish it has it all but at a cost.

Once again cracking report and i hope to ahve as mnay clean 40's in July next year :)

Outstanding photo's and a great report. Really enjoyed that. We are toying with either a trip to the Shetlands or Northern Norway next year but the Shetlands were looking favourite until your report!

Hi.
Yeah it certainly is a nightmare getting up there! I left my house at about 3pm on the monday, and arrived at the digs about 1pm on the tuesday:o, so about 22hrs:) The long journey is soon forgotten once out on the water though.
My mates left at about 1pm on the sunday, and stopped overnight at heathrow and alta, so about 48 hrs for them! They wern't bothered though as they had a couple of nights on the drink:)
Chrome pirks took their fair share of good fish, whilst I prefered a large shad, savage gear herring or tequila sunrise, also got a big fish on a whole coalfish.
I find dropping the shad down, you get takes on way down, reel back in through this area and drop back through it. Loads of big fish were taking a long way of the bottom.

Yer we paid £1180 all in and i mean food fuel the lot for 8 nights but everything is based on 4 sharing, if only 3 go the price goes up a canny bit.

Yer them we got alot of cod mid water using the same method as you used but its so hard not letting it go to the bottom i found ha. Have you booked again for next year or was it a one off? i ahd booked as a one off but after tasting the fishing i booked up again within a month of returning :)

What time did it get dark for you? we went in July so was as light at 12 noon as it was at 12 midnight but have wanted to try mid-end Aug for them big coalies as the biggest we could find in July was just over 8lb and they say Aug is the main month for the 20lber+ fish in good numbers

Hi.
Its the 3rd time we've been in 3 years, after we decided to go the once:) Totally adictive, not just the fishing, the scenery, boozy nights with mates and the freedom to fish at whatever time suits you! Havnt booked for next year, but will be soon, probs same area.
Been before in July and the 24hr daylight is handy for midnight sessions. This year the sun set about 10pm, but with it only dipping below the horizon for a few hours it never got pitch black, and got light again a few hours later.
August and september is the best months for big coalies, not that we got any huge ones. Popped over to sandland, where we had stayed the year before, and saw some 20lb coalies on the filliting table. Would love a huge coalie as the fight of these makes cod feel like a sack of shiote!

Yer we are off to Sandland thou Loppa/sandland all the same area really for a short steam.

Anyway good to see someone else fell in love with the area and not just for the fishing, it beats our waters hands down even on a bad day..as stated already dont you wish we could protect our waters like they do.

Once again well done :)
