hi me and my son and his friend gave roker pier blast yesterday we got there bwt 12 ish there was quite few fishing but nothing had been caught.we set up and casted out nothing then baited up again within few minutes my rod had small rattle then followed by a huge bend in it i grabbed it and struck rod was doubled over fish of a lifetime was on started to reel it in nice and slowly pumping away then disaster my gears went in my new fixed spool reel.so then it was down to hand balling it in my sons friend did this as i was wrapping my line by hand back on reel after while he got it to the pier wall then started lifting it up got it half way up then my son grabbed the line and steadily pulled it up got it to the top and saw this monsterous cods head then disaster once again line snapped and fish went crashing back in to the water this was biggest shore caught cod i have ever had privelige to hook in to and wont forget my experience in a hurry .were back there again tmos to give it another go.we fished the left hand side where there are no steps.:(

thanks.going to buy drop net for next season mate.

chances of you getting another fish like that are a few million to one, hope I am wrong and you are soon on the phone telling me to come and get photos, but a drop net is certainly a must for pier anglers, or you could of walked it to the becah.

Sorry to here you lost that lunker, but you really should have used your head mate... You would very rarely see a fish of that size being hand-balled up the side of the pier, you should have tried to drag it round to the stpes or somewhere you could get closer to the water.

Mind you, its the time of year when all the spawing fish come in to feed, so hopefully there will be more around, my turn to CATCH one now:D

yes your right in what you are saying.i dont do much pier fishing mainly boat it was a very unexpected fish indeed .would have tried walking it round pier but with my reel in pieces made it impossible as couldnt use rod .i fish loads wreks and never had cod on as big as this was .dont suppose ill ever forget its huge smile bugger.

i would be devastated mate, me and magical are fishing there friday night if i catch a cod or any fish that size(if only) i think i'l be taking it for a walk down to the beach:D

I feel for you mate, lost one off target rock a few years back on the lift. Swiftly bought a drop net that I have never had any need to use since lol

I fished on the Heugh last season with a very good angler,Steve Walker and he had a two hook flapper rig on. He hooked a nice Cod and it was good to watch. He nurtured it up to the surface and at no time tried to lift the fish. He was saying he only had 2.0 size hooks on and it was only lipped. I volunteered to handball the fish but steves response was to say no and he actually walked the fish gently down to the steps using his rod to gently pull it along. He guided the fish into the corner between the steps and the pier wall and i went down and lifted it out by the gills.
The fish was over 8lb as i recall and had loads of Roe inside.
Sorry about hearing you lost yours.-but the lift puts a lot of strain on hooks-knots and line.

well said mick.

its a different story mind you when they swallow the hook. had a fish 14lb on steetly on the lift (impossible to hand ball like - used my wrist with the help of the padding from my floatation suit, acting like a reel and kept wrapping the line round it until I got it over the pipe)

youve just got to make sure you have got a plan on how to land the fish even before you go to your chosen mark , the number one golden rule i wreckon like.
and always use a snood of the same breaking strain as your shockleader if your prepared to loose gear in the kelp, with a STRONG hook

blarr blarr blarr blarr......................................................

unlucky bud on the pig, know the feeling
