Lost fishing boats

Watched a program today and it said 34 uk fishing fleet boats lost in 2008 costing 9 lifes.

Said more could be lost this year as fisherman struggle to make it out on the days issued to them. Mind out of them 34, it did cross my mind how many met a end on purpose due to the hard times they having and large amounts of cash the boats will be covered for.

Anyone know how many fishing boats both prawn and fish are BASED in the Tyne now and i mean based not just using it for a few weeks of the year etc.

not many, not 100% certain but think its only 12 boats, not including the crabbers

in total there are 36 boats registered at North Shields, but the majority are under 10m potters

When you say the "crabbers" , how do they fish for them here? Is it like the "most dangerous catch" with big pots baited with fish or is it on a smaller scale like the lobster pot strings? I'm presuming they are the big orange edible crabs ? but I might even be wrong on that score as well , come to think of it , I'm a bit (a lot :red: ) ignorent of the workings of the commercials off our coast. I see the working boats on my way out at Amble , but don't really know what they fish for , again , looking at the nets and heavy weights on the back of them I'd guess at prawns and stuff off the bottom . I wouldn't like to work on them that's for sure , i wouldn't even like to go out on some of them and there is one in particular that I wouldn't even fancy walking around on whilst it's tied up never mind out at sea .

the crabbers will be working strings of 20 to 30 pots, normal lobster pot size things not the geet big cages, and they could have up to 2 or 300 pots set all over the the place, mainly brown crabs and lobsters if they're lucky

the trawlers are all after the prawns, the big metal doors (otter boards) are used to keep the mouth of the net open as its being dragged along

No million dollar crab catches off the tyne then, sounds like a hard life , I'd watch the cobles come in with the salmon catches at Newbiggin when I was a kid , one of the high points of a fortnights holiday in a caravan on church point That seemed like a great way to earn a living when I was 10 years old , till one was chopped in half by a Norwegian trawler and all on board were lost ........ kinda put me off a bit
I'm happy playing at it on a calm weekend and catching a cod or two for fun , leave the real stuff to the pros!
I had a mate once I used to shoot with , he was made redundant from the pits and bought a part share in a salmon coble only to be bought out again by the government when they bought the nets out , he probably works for Land rover now

The Winter figures are inflated by visitors so to use the figures from end of June 08.

*** The first figure is the boats registered to the port. The second figure is those actually working from the port during the quarter ending June 30th. During summer months some boats move away to other regions and some come out for an annual clean.
