Alright peep's

How does everyone have their Elite 5x set up, i tested mine out on the wrecks yesterday and TBH my old Garmin 100 that was 12 years old showed up more detail. This unit is rated as one of the best fish finders for the money so i am sure it will be set up better if i spend abit of time on it.

So just interested how other people have theirs set up.

Hi Richie

What transducer are you running and where is it mounted?

I have the HDS5X and use an airmar through hull transducer and so far it has been excellent. No way as good as my old Koden though. but I just set it to automatic and that is it.

I will have to check but it is one of the better ones you can purchase and the transducer is mounted in through the hull just left of the gear box about 1.5m from the back of the boat but i know looking at the pic's on the net, the picture on the elite 5x looks nowt like the detail i have on my fish finder.

I have been so keen to get out at sea i spent no time setting it up really, all i changed was set it at....

200htz

water clarity medium

ping fast

The bottom detail looks poor even when on 4x zoom and i will play around with the fish detection as its set for fish shapes (thou i never pay much attention once the wreck is marked)

Sounds like possible ping speed and water depth setting. see this from my manual

Ping Speed controls the rate the transducer uses to
send sonar waves into the water. A higher ping speed
will yield the best results when you are moving across
the water at a high rate of speed or fishing from a dock. The reverberation of too
much ping speed can cause interference on the screen.

If its too high it can cause problems

What do you have the sensitivity set at Rich, I have my Lowrance set high, but my unit is over 10 yrs old, and if I turn it down a little bit, I loose some detail and fish marks.

Thanks for the replys and pm's lads.

I will need to check it out more, as i say i kind of jumped in the boat and wetn fishing before checking the fish finder out, it wa sonly when i started to look at marking wrecks i knew where there that i realised it just looks like sand and mood and poor.

Just a update on this fish finder, after 5 trips at sea and playing around with loads of settings etc i have decided that this fish finder rated as "one of the best on the market" in the under £400 rage is total cr%p and will be removed from the boat the next time i lift her out.

Plus side it does what i want it to do, i.e let me map a wreck out but not as good as i am after so its out with the new and in with the newer :)

My view for what its worth may help others who are looking into purchasing a fish finder.
