Luminous squid rig

I've been looking at luminous squid rig's which claim to be good for cod etc. - it seems too good to be true. Has anyone tried one of these rigs for beach casting and has it ever paid off? Do you have to add some live (or other) bait into the rig too? I can't see how a rubber bait on it's own would attract anything as there's no smell? I get the luminous part, as it would make it stand out in murky water - but getting a fish to actually take the bait I'm not sure about. Is it a waste of time trying?

Cheers,

Al

Something I learned when on a night dive scuba diving, was that on a night dive and you wave your hand or watched another diver you could see fluorescent green looking lights because of the water being disturbed caused a reaction know as bio chemical luminescence so I reckon if a predatory fish sees this it thinks its food as in a fish or squid and that why they take the lures you are asking about and hence they would work in deep dark sea water IE from a boat jigging, you would be better using florescent beads on your trace in dark water from the shore or night fishing in my opinion. Have you ever wonder why the surf looks white when you are night fishing, Its bio chemical luminescence.;)

Thanks lads - well I bought one from Billy's today anyway so I'm going to give it a try tonight for a couple of casts off Whitley beach, baited with some squid and then some mackerel. The bloke in the shop said the rig was quite good for flatties?

I'll let you know how I get on.
