lure fishing by colours

when lure fishing do you think the colour of the lures make any difference,why i ask this question is that i have fished for many species of fish over the years and whatever colour spinner, popper, feather. or hoki etc i have used from silver to black if the fish are there they will take whatever colour you present them with,for instant fishing at depth from a boat where it's pitch black cod will take any coloured hoki you throw at them from bright pink to black and it's the same from the shore when fishing in gin clear water, the fish don't seem to go for any particular lure more than another because of its colour, i really do think the main reason for catching fish on lures is not because of the colour of the lure but the movement and vibrations it gives off, any comments lads.

I think it matter although it is difficult to predict what colour will fish best. When pollock fishing from the shore goes quiet, a change to a different coloured jelly or swap to a spinner often brings quick results. The fish seem to become accustomed to a particular colour swimming past and learn to leave it until something different comes along.
When out on the boat last week, we took most of the fish on a blue lure, it must have out-fished any other colour by at least 6-to-1 for codling. Changing the position from top to bottom of the trace made no difference, it was still the blue they wanted.

Pretty much the rule I follow for Bass fishing, but also I think different lures behave in different ways, sometimes they want it up top, sometimes along the bottom, sometimes rattle, silent, loads of vibration, slow vibration and so on.

I reckon it's a bit like fly fishing where you have to try and match the hatch, looking for any bait fish either in the water or in bird's mouths should help.

In 1970 a Danish Marine Biologist called J. Moller Christensen carried out tests underwater to see to what depths a coloured object retained it's colour.
It was found that red was the first to lose it's colour and become grey just under the surface, a matter of a couple of metres. This was followed by yellow, next was green all within ten or fifteen metres of the surface.. At one hundred metres blue and black were the only ones still retaining their original colour.
When sunlight, containing all the colours of the spectrum penetrates water the colours are absorbed one after another.At about 1,000 metres depth it is dark.
Fish feed by smell and vibration, they can only see what is in their immediate vicinity, not because they have poor eyesight, but because there is less light under water. The more smell from a bait, or the more movement from a lure the more chance a fish will be attracted to it.

I think it depends on what level the fish you are targetting feed at....i.e...if you are targetting a bottom dwelling species by fishing a surface lure, any colour lure will look dark from below as it's silhouetted against the sky.
If those fish are feeding above the prey species, then a lighter colour will stand out against the sea floor (depending on depth)....Also some holographic materials only need the slightest amount of light to flash a sparkle of colour to attract a fish....and obviously sound travels further under water than it does in air.

I reckon it matters somehow as how many times do you see one person on a boat catching one after another on a certain colour & the rest not catching.Then everyone that has that colour swaps over to it & hey presto they start to catch where as those that didnt change carry on blanking

i have done some diving even at 5mt all the colours are muted but do fishes eye work like ours the might see colours different to us
