Lure Fishing South Shields Pier 19/09/12

I managed to get out for a short session on the pier last night about an hour and a half up to last light. I started out with a 28g Zenith spinning various locations from the rail end up towards the end. The water on the harbour side was very brown and there was a strong wind from that direction too so I was mainly casting on the seaward side. After about an hour with no fish I settled at a spot just past the blocks and with only half an hour of light left I changed tactics and put on a black firetail jelly worm to try for a pollack. Second cast, bang, a nice little pollack about 30cm. Just size but not worth taking home for tea so returned. I have never tried jellies on the pier before so was quite pleased with that result. I'll definately be giving it a go again another time. Anyway, no more fish after then and I packed in about 8.15 when it was too dark to see anything.

Sorry didn't take any photos.

Yeah Skott I had an excellent trip, thanks. I almost beat my PB four times! There is a full catch report with pics on seaanglingreports.co.uk I didn't put it on here since it's not from the north east

nice one mate, but its not the fact that it was a jellyworm, as you say your worm was black and black is a killer colour when lure fishing as it is easier for a fish to spot in low light conditions ;)

Nice one Mike it saved a blank, I'm guessing the mackerel season on shields pier is over now. I was gonna head down this morning for first light but the weather forecast put me off, glad I didn't bother its been horrid all day.

Mackerel seasons not over Pete I had a few last weekend, they come and go that's all. Last year I was still catching them mid-october. I'm heading down first light tomorrow (Friday) to have another go with the jellies for a pollack. Probably also Saturday and Sunday so maybe see you there if you are out.

well done. Never caught a fish off pier using jellies but interesting to know you can will have to give it a go sometime.
Mick.
