Mackerel - the debate continues...

now far can you chuck 30gms,, deffo getting a spining rod tommorrow for a bit sport on saturday

Like Jim said the distance doesn't seem to matter as there was a bloke next to me who was casting literally 20ft in front of him at one point and he was catching...

I was able to cast about 30 yds or so I would say...but the 3 I caught were all taken about halfway through the retrieve so they were very close...

Everyone is different mate, you get three people standing next to each other, using identical gear and they will probably all be casting different distances.

Jim.

Don't go spending too much money on it, you can catch just as easy on a cheaper combo as long as it is not rubbish. That said, if it is something that you are wanting to spend a lot of time using then get a decent one. I have several different ones that I use for different places.

nah wont be spending more then 50 quid will see what reelsport has got in

Mine's a 10ft Daiwa "Vertice" Telescopic - bought mainly for my summer hols in mind. RRP £30 aprox...have a good ganders at them before you buy though coz I did have a look at a real ugly Shakespeare one that even Tim at Frasers "said you could take that on your hols and leave it there"...just about said it all really

I have a berkely cherrywood and I love it, need a new reel tho'.

My first tope in 2006 was caught on very cheap, light telescopic rod, that was fun!

I totally agree with only taking what you need and it's this time of year I would love the fishing license to be in force. It boils my p**s people killing fish needlessly, getting mortal and throwing every bit of crap you have in your box/bag into the sea. This is the only year I've caught mackrel in numbers and have kept about 80 of them for bait (for my project though which I take out up to 12 kids at a time but not for me). I saw a lad the other day using a tiny spinning rod and once he'd caught his bag full and didn't want any more he kept on fishing. I can understand the sport eliment of it but he had 5 daylights and used a spinner for a weight. His rod doubled over with 1 but when he got a full house he had to pull them in by hand, just to throw them back. It seems some people think the more you catch the better you are? It's much more fun catching one at a time on light gear.

i bought a shakespeare 9 ft pro-am spinning rod from lathems fishing tackle
£14.99 can take a spinner up to 40 grammes which i can cast up to 80 yards very light and powerful rod .recomended good quality for the price:thumbup:

I was talking to a lad last night who had just been out on his boat catching mackeral on a spinning rod he bought from the pound shop (Yes Jim you guessed it he paid slightly more than 99p and less than £1.01 :D ) he said the rod was well up to the job & good fun.
