macky !!!!!!!

hi dizzy yeh I remember last may when we where hammering them on the end of the heugh
on another note, the only reason the macky come close into shore is not the weather or the water temp rising it's because the bait fish come close inshore ie sand eels and sprats, if they stay offshore so do the macky, their food source is the reason we can catch them close in, not climatic conditions.

Good point

100s of shoals of sprats close in at the moment, we picked up shoal after shoal from the piers right upto the 3 mile mark then they started to phase out. Whatever the reason the sad fact is we are struggling for any UK wide.

I am up Tope fishing again this week, just spoke with the skipper and between two boats in 2 days they landed a grand total of 6 mackerel.

Had one off the flat rock at the Mull, last Friday. Poor fishing in general, not many Pollack about either.

Had a phone call from a mate in Whitby this evening, today was the first time this year that the boats have had a decent show of mackerel..

landing them in good numbers...must of passed us bye ?

Coldest winter in 50 years is slowing everything down, I personally think we are 2 month behind. Starting to show now. They will come, just needs time. We never used to go mackerel bashing until July 20 years ago when I was a kid. Yet the last 10 years (maybe bar last year), I have had them in may time in numbers. Had over 30 for the freezer/family from the south gare on mid may year before last, with the seals taking half of hook ups.
