no idea what maddies are, i keep reading about people catching using them help please what are they?

They are small ragworms. You can dig them in Estuary mud and they're apparently great for sticking in bunches on fine hooks. Good for flounder, bass, mullet.

Not sure if they can be dug in NE but I am sure some of the more experienced guys on this forum can help...(once they get back in from celebrating yet another convincing NUFC win down the pub(oh, yeah and SAFC too))

used to be millions of them in the wansbeck, to be honest there a pain in the ass to use and i never found them that much cop, more flatties on mackerel strip!

maddies are also called harbour rag good for match fishing or after small species in catch messure and relese matches
small thin rag worm very active
if not casting far (ie river marks) just head hook them and gentley lob out they wriggle like mad wich some fish love

and it takes forever to bait up each hook, mackerel is the king of catcing small fish in the nort east.

when i was a kid it used to be kipper, yes kipper!!!! lost count of the number of flatties kipper used to catch me!!

top bait tipped with macky in the upper estuaries in cumbria. beats crab every time, unless theres a lot of bait robbing crabs about.

thats what i used when i was a kid fishing in the wear kippers worked every time. always caught fish.

A little trick too use with maddies is to tie a small length of thick bright red wool just above the hook eye, tie it in the middle so it looks like 2 small worms. it might sound silly but it will flap around in the water and add visual attraction for flatties.
