Mag conversion : is it worth it ?

I have a daiwa 30sha and am wondering wether to mag it or just buy a second reel (have to talk the wife round 1st, she went bananas when I bought the daiwa for £ 50, didn't dare tell her how much it really was ! ?).Casting wise I am a complete noob with multipliers (this is my 1st) . Pier fishing or rock fishing I am coping with but I am wanting to get some distance (before winter starts) and this reel just isn't doing it for me.Currently using the red brakes cos the white ones just make the reel explode when I whack it.I know Rutherfords do a mag kit for less than £20, and was thinking this would help ?
Any ideas

for learnign to use a mulitplier, id say yes, mag it..

a magged reel is so much mroe easier to adjust.

yeah it should be worth it, iv just baught a lovely abu 6500 with the centre mag conversion and cermic bearings and it slows it right down with the magnets on fully but wind them right off and it just keeps spinning, so it can be slowed down however you like it. definatly what u want to learn to use a multi i got this reel for casting tho not to slow it down for fishing

I wouldn't bother putting a mag on a SL30. Just put one red break block and one white in and progressively get lower. I'm sure I've got one red in mine. U can still cast really good distances with 30lb line.

I wouldn't get a 6500 to fish up here on our coastline either. Penn mags or SL20 etc..are the only reel I would fish with at distance. North of the tyne anyway.

Never thought of mixing the brakes Codcodcod, I'm off down Hendon prom this morning I'll give that a try then decide.

Most reels which are manufactured without mags will cast decent distances without mags,just need to make sure you have adequate brakes in,try playing about with the brakes available for that reel and it should be ok,the mags wont give you a better cast just more control over it,but if you are just learning with the multi and not really whacking it out i would not go to the expense of mag conversion,practice your technique and as your distance improves maybe then commit to adding the mags,i have the mag conversions that Andy sells and they are canny for the money,if you do go for one,it certainly wont do your reel any harm,but as said the correct combination of brakes will stop blowing your reels up

if its ur first multiplier if i was you id just stick to the sl30 the way it is, like 1 of the lads said 1 red block and 1 white block will be fine ive used a couple of reels now and the sl30 is fantastic never have problems with it and a can still hit 150 yards and am skin and bones haha
