jason,
john has just dropped all of his customers in the s@@te nice way to run a buisness i suggest if he ever gets another boat no one should fish with him

guys i think John is a decent fella. Been out with him 3-4 times and he has always been very helpful and considerate. He was also 100% reliable and would not let you down at the last minute before a trip unlike certain other skippers i can think of.
I thought his boat was fantastic. Don,t know nowt about any problems just heard stories.
I would go out for a trip again anytime with him-he knows his stuff.
Its a shame he has,nt got back to people who booked trips but whats to say he is not going to buy another boat in the mean time.
I rang him when i heard the news and explained how sorry i was-and i hope he gets sorted.

mick,
the story is he is going to buy a private boat wot about the guys who dont look on the net they will ring a day before there trip and find out they dont have a fishing trip he could have at least told the ppl that have booked trips but i still dont how you felt safe as i explained in pm the problems it had i even seen it get towed in one day buy the famous its better of on a trailer and away back to ware it come from

From the rumours i have heard,John went bankrupt BUT is trying to sort trips out for the lads who paid in advance with other boat owners he knows,as i say that is a rumour i have heard, but it comes from a guy out of the hartlepool marina

Maggie may

Maggie may

Been down the pool today and have been reliably informed that the maggie may is finished. Apparently it was no longer sea worthy and is to be scrapped. Thought the skipper may have informed people who have booked about this. Had a look at the famous whilst there. Looks to be a cracking boat. My money will be going in this direction this summer - knowing the skipper Dave Lumley I think I will get value for money.

i would be suprised if the maggie may was not sea worthy and have to be destroyed as its a very new boat

but john did sink a lot of cash into the boat and to be honest the weather last year wasnt too kind to the charter skippers

but another thing to consider is the price at hartlepool and after the deisel hike
look at the south coast boats some of them were charging 70 pound for a typical day out how much is the hartlepool boats

We are still one of the cheapest ports to go fishing from most charters i know of in our area charge £25-£40 a full day fishing......as stated above, you may get 6hrs max for that money in many other ports.

Its a hard life at sea and i would hate to think my income was based on how many days i could get out in a season not having a stable income to plan things with.

When i first started charter boat fishing, i remember a host of boats from Amble to the pool, look how manys till remain.

Agree it would have been best to tell people if they left there numbers with him.

I remember a discussion (cant remember where) about the MM having something wrong with her hull. I've fished on her a few times and put a report somewhere that if you dont catch fish you can have a game of five a side cos there's so much deck space lol. John struck me as a genuine guy that wouldn't rip a man off and if the business has gone t*ts up he'll do all he can for his punters, hope I'm right!

totally agree on the sentiments around John. I saw the post elsewhere some time ago around rumours of unseaworthiness but can not find it now.

john always was a willing skipper who tried his hardest to put you on the fish - he even made the tea.

i hope all is well with him and that he does right.

regards

jason

the maggi may is away to the boat builder as it had so many problems this has gone on for a while john is buying a private boat. my point was john should have told his customers as i have said the guys that just ring up the day before will not know the maggi may has gone.you work all week ring john on friday night bait and tackle at the ready but no boat

I am sure if this is the case then john will be going through his records and letting people know does anyone know anyone who has booked a trip and then phoned up and been told different

he is a very genuine guy and i bet he will be trying to get alternatives before he phones just so that the lads dont lose out

Never been out on the maggi may but was out on johns previous boat "esk star" a few times, good skipper and a canny fella.

Heard rumors a while ago about trouble with the gel coat on maggi may, this may have been the trouble.
