Man on pier hit by wave

Hi lads I have just herd that a fisherman has been hit by a wave on roker pier today ad his back is broken.
No name yet.
So if anyone is fishing tonight take care we don't want to loose any more of us.

Thats the dangers of fishing any spot in bad weather, i was taken off my feet at Hendon wall when i was 17 and knew nothing about it until i was picking myself up off the floor, it could happen to any of us, viewing the web cam it was some sea on last night.

Lets hope it is not a wheel chair break and one that will heal in time.

Similar thing happened to me and my mate at Henson prom 2-3 years ago. Had I not grabbed him and the wall lip we both could have ended up as fish food. Both horizontal underwater as three huge waves hit within seconds of each other. Lets hope this lads injuries heal and we see him back out soon.

its funny i went past there at 1 o clock this afternoon there was a rite swell it was rolling on top of pier then and couldnt belive the pier was open i said to my bro that will be shut in the next half hour cos itl be swamped at high water big tide makes it ten times worse,they mustof left it open

I was there,the sea was mental.people were having their gear washed off,they only had the pier open a couple of hours,stupid to open the gates and hope the lads who climbed them before high tide are ok tonight!nutters.
Hope the lad who was hurt is ok,didn't look nice at the time.

I know what you're saying Eddie, but unfortunately there are anglers out there who think that cos the wind has died down or its sunny, its going to be a nice day to go fishing.

What we need is an experienced angler who knows weather/sea conditions to advise the council, and let them know whether the pier is safe to open or not. At the minute, I think the only thing the person in charge of the keys knows about the sea is that its wet.

There was even warnings on the radio to stay clear of the piers and be careful on the beaches what with the wind and high tide.Another thing these guys must remember there not only putting at risk there own lives but there risking the poor guys that's sent out to rescue them.

my ex brother in law and girlfriend were caught on the pier only thing they were guilty of was inexpierience and assuming it was safe as the gates were open ..

15 on roker pier 1 had to be air lifted to hospital with a broken leg. Horden beach 2 were washed into the sea and rescued. Sadly another i believe has been washed into the sea from horden and drowned. Makes my stomach turn thinking about it

To be fair Jim, a lot of this is down to inexperience. I'm guessing the gates were opened at low water. With it being a big spring, there would have been no warning of how big the sea will have been approaching top of the water, as there would have been next to no water there at low water.

I've fished there for all my angling life and at low water it can look safe as houses, even in a good sea, but come half flood, its a different matter all together.

Whats needed is someone in charge of those keys who knows about sea/weather conditions - its no good blaming inexperienced lads.
