Went over to Maryport today, fishing the north pier trying for dogfish, bass, gurnards, whatever was there really...
got there for around 12, dinner time, to fish 3 hours up and a couple down. had one rod cast as far as I could with mackerel and sandeel on a 2/0, and another rod with a two hook flapper with size 2 hooks, macky on one hook, rag on the other, cast different distances closer in.
I was expecting calm, sunny weather, but the first 4 hours were horrendous! really strong blustery wind, making everything difficult, and huge lumps of soft weed all over the line and rigs everytime I reeled them in.
the trusty RT Axe (the green weed on the wall is the stuff that was covering the rigs).
then 4 hours in, 1 hour after high tide, the weed eased off a bit and I got a little eel on the flattie rod
and a couple of minutes later I noticed a little rattle on the big rod (which was surprising because the rod was all over in the wind anyway, but it looked like a fish knock).
I saw it surface as I was reeling in and thought it was a whitie, Sean called Dogfish, but we were both wrong
still not sure exactly what species (ive got another thread going for advice), but brightened up what was looking to be a terrible session
then the sun came out for all of 2 minutes
sean was using the same tactics as me, and he only had one fish - a dead cod, the bait and hook were in its mouth but it was stone cold dead.
fished for another hour, but decided to call it a day and head home after I cracked off.
Not a great session, really hard work with the wind and weed, and a long way to go for a couple of small fish. But happy with the little shark!
