Metal reel seats for beach casters?? why not

for people who fish regular they will notice, over time, that the threads tend to wear out out on plastic reel seats

why don't the manufacturers like century produce a metal reel seat?

it cannot be down to price as a lot of the boat rods have got them.

someone should invent one and mak a fortune:D

30 years ago they were all metal. nice and heavy ton weight, used to bind up with salt,go rusty, chrome fall off, didn't grip the reel very well.

Personally I don't think there's owt wrong with the century reelseat though I've got to admit I've got coasters in the box incase it does break when tightening the thing up. After a sesh i just whipe the thing down with freshwater to get rid of the salt contaminant and I aint had a problem yet.
I agree with you harry, less metal, less rust:D

seats

seats

i am not sure but years ago i heard there was some form of chemical and electrical reaction between some metal and salt water that made them corrode fast

I've been toying with working a couple of real seats up in titanium - they'd be uber-light, super-strong and about as immune to sal****er as metal can be.

It wouldn't be commercially viable due to the cost of materials and the tooling to work it, but it's a project that keeps coming back into my mind so one of these days I'll get to it.

It's waaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy down on my to-do list though and I just haven't got the time to monkey around in the workshop at the moment.

The trouble with graphite and similar products is that although it is strong and saves weight (and offers much, much cheaper manufacturing costs due to moulding rater than machining) it warps badly under stress and can be prone to cracking.

A lot of the popular sea angling reels we use over here that are predominantly graphite are regularly replaced in countries where big or powerful fish are the order of the day because they warp and fail under load.

Any product brought to market has to offer low production costs and a realistic profit margin or it's not worth making from a commercial perspective.

interesting replies.

make a titanium one for the TTR and i will pay good money for it mate., and am sure other anglers would too

when you hammer the reels and rods like i do an invention like that would be great.

the century ones are just not good enough in my opinion.

I've used a placa century reelseat for around 3 years now and as i said before never had a problem with it. I think their ok providing their used correctly like:D

There is a very good reason why metallic reel seats are not favoured for salt-water fishing and it has very little to do with costs for design and manufacture, robustness or weight.

Salt-water is one of the best electrolytes naturally available and will cause Galvanic corrosion (which is an electrochemical process) between the reel-seat and reel, unless adequate cathodic protection or insulation is used. Meaning that when you assemble two dissimilar metals together and expose them to salt-water, corrosion will automatically and inevitably occur producing further damaging acids along the way. The rate of the corrosion will be determined primarily by the metallic elements selected. The majority of modern fishing reels are actually manufactured using Aerospace grade Aluminium to prevent corrosion from oxidation. Some of the more high end reels use advanced composites to prevent this. A Titanium reel-seat with a typical modern cast /machined Aluminium reel, although very strong and light would pose a very high corrosion risk and cause rapid corrosion because the materials are so dissimilar when it comes to their galvanic properties. Even if the reel-seat / reel where plated or coated, the continued use and assembly would soon wear / chip the coating away due to metal to metal contact and corrosion would set in.

Century, Abu and the like are well aware of this principle, hence the use of plastics to prevent the situation from occurring.

Generally, using metallic reels / reel-seats for salt-water fishing is a guaranteed way to prematurely wear or age your expensive gear!...Just my tuppence worth.
