Mini species/ ultralight gear

Anyone else on here mess about with the smaller species on ultralight gear during the warmer months? Not so much LRF style fishing with lures, but using mini natural baits on the same sort of UL tackle?
Been having a dabble myself this summer and have to say it`s great fun :D

Was just wondering whether there are any other UL weirdos on here LOL!!

Not yet, had to import a reel to match so I'm waiting for that to arrive from Japan. I know its getting a little late, I should be getting my big gear out but I'm going to try use light gear all the way through.....

Got the rod from america what was like £60 inc delivery but now its £200 from the same guy so I may have got a deal there.

My light gear will be going with me through the Winter too, just on the off chance :D

Phill, much cheaper (but still good) alternatives to that one....check out Tronix Pro Rockfish rods (£25 RRP), and Silstar Matrix "tiny" reels (under £20 on Ebay). My mate, who`s well into LRF with lures uses both of those, and rates them very highly for the price. He also uses a 5ft 6 Abu Devil Spin UL rod, which is less than £20 RRP too, and also a very good rod for LRF.
If you bought those, or similar, you`d be able to get a stack of decent LRF lures and other stuff for the same price as the setup you posted :)

Tackle retailers are cashing in on the rising popularity of LRF, and charging ridiculous prices for what should be a very cheap form of fishing...

thanks mate I'll take a look, buy the time you add 15-20 for the braid and £15 for the lures pluss whatever the mono is you'll probs be pretty close to £100

Yep, I think I fall into the 'UL weirdo' category, but with Lures not bait.... :)

Got really light telescopic and light reel I use when on holiday with bait, caught some canny fish with it got 6lb line on reel tried for mullet in a few marinas but never got one yet, never used it here

I started off LRF fishing with tiny soft plastics Si, saw the huge difference scented baits such as Power Isome made to results, then tried tiny natural baits and caught even more. Now, I prefer natural baits most of the time. Get a better chance of hooking the smaller species if they hang on a bit longer, as they do with the natural stuff, as opposed to plastics which they can hit and then eject in a split second :D

how many different species have you managed mate, personally ive only managed a blenny and about 20 long spined sea scorpion.

Only started this Summer Phill, had Sea Scorpions, Whiting, Dab, Flounder, Coalies, a small Ballan Wrasse, and mini-Codling. My mate Lee, who`s well into LRF`ing, has had 11 species this year, including a gorgeous little Corkwing Wrasse and Leopard Spotted Goby :)

I'll second that, a couple of Blenny's, loads of Sea scorpions and Coley are the dizzy heights I have achieved.... :D the majority caught on Power Isomes, the rest on Ecogear Shirasu, Grass minnows, Paramax etc

Looks like we might have a serious contender for the Lure Fishing Challenge 2013 on our hands Phil? The competition is hotting up. :D

Those Power Isomes seem to outfish most of the other plastics. Majority of Lee`s 11 species have been on those, with a few on Berkley Gulp Fish Fry, which also seem pretty good.
2 "almost" captures I forgot to mention were a smallish Turbot up at St Abbs harbour, and a small Plaice - both fell off before I could land them (gutted :D).
