I seldom post on here,but something that really ****es me off happend today in moonfleet shop.i had been to Newcastle and on the way back thought id pop in for a first visit.i arrived at 9 35 the shop opens at 10am.i think it was Jimmy that opened the shop i asked if he had any crimps for wire the answer was no i asked for an 8 ounce mould we dont keep moulds just the weights, fair enough
anyway i got a few bits and bobs and went to pay for them he said a fiver.so i gave him a scottish 20 pound note to which he said he we dont accept scottish money.so i said well put them back and i wont be comeing back to this shop which he replied its not me im just doing what ive been told.im not having a go at Jimmy as he was polite and helpfull the whole time but it really gets my goat i travell all over scotland and never been refused to pay in english money i only returned on saturday from lochaline this is not the first time shops have refused to accept scottish money its legal tender for for fuxxs sake. i wonder what would happend if id stuck 1,500 pound in scottish money on the counter for a big game reel well thats my first and last visit to moonfleet rant over.

I don't know about the legalities of not accepting Scottish money but the only other reason for not taking it will be cos they can't tell snidey Scots notes from real ones, there's simply no other reason because as you say, It's legal tender.
Go on, go in with 1K in Scottish dosh & say 'take it or leave it'!
 
Technical Scottish notes are not legal tender in England they in effect a promise from the bank of Scotland to pay the holder the value in pounds sterling. If you given a Scottish £5 note as part of your change in England you would be well within your rights to refuse it, infact I think if a shop is given a Scottish note in England I don't think your allowed to give it at change, you have to cash it with the bank. It's crazy really, my local used to accept Northern Irish money from my mate we he was home but by rights they didn't have to. It's all to do with what is legal tender and what is legal currency. There's some other funny little quirks in the rules (can't remember them exactly now) to do with not being able to pay over a certain value in 1p coins and paying with postage stamps.
 
very fair comment eddie.pity it was the said shop,could of been ANY shop in england.i jimmys a nice bloke.recken he wasent happy with the situation aswell,as said not the mans fault.if its any joy for you,could lend you a 8oz mould,for a week or so.just give me a call.reg.

Legal Tender Guidelines

As far as I can tell, if you purchase something for something that costs say £100 and pay for it in pounds sterling (legal tender) there can be no argument in court that you have played the debt. If you pay with Scottish notes, Euros, dollars or any other legal currency you are not protected by law and if there was a dispute over payment you wouldn't be covered. Furthermore if you pay for something worth say £10 and you use a Scottish £20 or a $100 Bill you wouldn't technically be able to give any change. In effect it would be like paying with a gold ring and expecting to get half the ring back as change

corection it now says on scottish notes I PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER THE SAME AS ON english NOTES SO THAT MAKES THEM LEGAL TENDER ALL OVER BRITAIN
 
Jock mcplop money keep it in Scotland or for the monopoly board, all the shop needs to say is they can't tell if its real or fake, same as £50 notes every shop has the right to refuse money if they can't identify it as legal.

Some one needs to tell the CSBS and the royal mint then, because both there websites say it's legal currency not legal tender
 
it was me who served you, I said to you " we are not allowed to take Scottish £20 as we cant tell if they are fake "
you were not happy with this and and said something about spending English money all over Scotland without a problem, that's fair enough. you actually threw the split rings and other packets down on the counter, and said ( now I might get bollocked for this, but its word for word ) well **** this I don't want them.
And you stormed over to the door, I said to you " I am only doing as I have been told "
you left the shop, the 2 blokes who were also in the shop at that time said to me " we are new to fishing and hope it does not make us like that "
What you fail to mention is the point that you had English money with you, yet when told I wouldn't take the Scottish note you never offered English tender.


Just adding this as I didn't read your whole post, regarding the big penn international, come into the shop with £1,500 in Scottish money, see if I take it, I most certainly would not, we cannot tell fake Scottish notes mates, but we can tell fake English notes, and that's the only reason

I use moonfleet all the time never had any complaints about the lads that work their so if jimmy said there not allowed to take scotish bank notes then whats the problem and to have English money in your pocket and storm out the shop in a hissy fit think you need to grow up m8
 
Jimmy get your facts right i did not throw the split rings onto the counter they where allready on the counter with the hooks and other bits and bobs as for not paying with english money if i had pulled a english note out i would have but i didnt.im not going to get into a slagging match,other shops take them no problem ,end of.

:D that was my understanding aswell.

It's up to an individual shop how they want to do business I guess.... I've never had an issue with moonfleet or the staff, in fact its normally the opposite, top lads and very helpful.
 
Mutus / Eddie, maybe I used the wrong words to describe your actions, so here are the correct words. yes the items were on the counter, you actually picked them up, I thought you were going to put them back from where you got them, then you put them on the counter quite heavily ( slammed/slapped) then walked away, and left me to put them back. this of course can be verified by the cctv. No slanging match from me at all mate, but if you are going to relay a story, at least cover every point of it.

Wasabi or whatever ya name is, check how many posts were done before I replied, i don't come on here very often at all now, so I was actually surprised when I seen the post, and obviously I am going to put my side of the story to people, so not childish at all.
