moonfeet shop

Jimmy I wouldn't worry about it mate people who know you like me incuded know you wouldn't cause a fuss.......just doing what you were told to do Best to use English money in English shops Simples

Jimmy is a cracking fella working in the shop. Always helpful and gives good advice. I can see exactly where the problem lays with Scottish money. I recently got £50 out of mini bank at Eyemouth and the notes had Clydeside bank on them. They looked like bloody monopoly money. I was worryed about my local shops accepting them when I got home but luckily the cash payment machine in local Tescos accepted them. I was glad to get rid of them.
Mick.

I always end up with them - the mother in law is lives in Eyemouth so I am usually up there once a month or so. Tend to just spend them in the bigger shops when I come back - either that or give them to the kids as their pocket money so the problem is transferred to them :D

I fully understand that the Moonfleet guy refusing to accept Scottish money, as he just was following the shop's policy.

However as a Scot I find the "can't tell if it's a fake" argument a bit disingenuous. A detector pen or a UV light detector works equally well on Scottish and English banknotes, so I am unconvinced by this excuse for refusing Scottish notes.

I always bring Scottish notes when we come down and only once in 5 years have I had any bother, as most businesses seem pretty enlightened these days. It was 3 Summers ago in a pub in North Shields, four of us had just come off a charter boat and went for a drink. I ordered two pints, a bottle of cider and a gin and tonic and gave the barman a ten and a five pound note. He said "That money is no good in here mate, you need to pay with English cash." My friend David went to get his wallet out his pocket, I stopped him. I very politely said to the barman "Fair enough mate, we will go somewhere else." We turned to leave and he shouted "What am I supposed to do with these?" I just gave him a cheery smile and we left! I would never be rude, but equally I would always leave a shop/pub etc if they refused my money and give my business to another establishment.

As people have said Scottish notes are not legal tender in England, but equally, neither Scottish or English notes are legal tender in Scotland and we don't get our knickers in a twist about it! :)

Here's a little tip if anyone has any Scottish notes that they think may be fake.

Drop them on the floor in front of a jock.......if they hit him on the head then they are real.

Glad to help, Ian.

Just wait till the Scots finally do "go their own way"; it'll be full on "foreign money" then, with proper exchange rates etc.

If the UK really is "united", it's money should be all the same, no matter where you live within the so called "kingdom"

This carry on with Jockenese cash is nothing at all new or unusual. I sold a couple of open canoes a few years ago and they both went north of the border but both buyers made a point of paying with English money, without me even asking.

Personally I think it's a poor show that any shop doesn't accept Scottish notes especially as we are so close to the Border, however that's you prerogative I guess.
Maybe a polite sign in the shop would save any future embarrassment.

I am 41 year old lived in England since I was 10 year old / I am season ticket at nufc but I am Scottish and proud of it but I wear a England shirt more than I do a rangers or Scotland one . if Scotland want to go on there way let them and dam fools if they do BUT if all of you went to Scotland like I do a few times a year to see family and they refused English notes which they do not they would be a even bigger uproar

Petty in my eyes as kayos said they is pens etc no bank in England will refuse u paying in a Scottish note nor will one in Scotland paying in a English note

moon fleet turning business away there loss { which will be picked up on the internet I may add from search engines }

well i don't blame him .......everything in scotland is fake .....anything a man wearing a skirt has made should be treat with extreme caution ....when you find your self passing though the skirt wearing part of the uk you should pay by card and leave thus solving this problem ...

In reply to Kayos, yes mate I readily accept that there are pens on the market to detect fake notes, however we do not have them in our shop, feel free to ask any of our customers if they have seen such a thing in use, we look at notes, check for the metallic strip and the holographic strip as well as the queens head.
So no it is not a sorry or a pathetic reason or whatever you may decide to call it mate, its plainly and simply the truth.

Maybe your Boss should invest a few quid for one then, as they work for all notes!

Scottish notes have a metallic strip, a hologram and even the Queen's head(although sometimes people like Robert Burns) too, hence my confusion as to why "you can't tell if they are fake!" would be valid reason for refusing them!

And I never doubted your lack of a pen or UV light.

Well I can give reasons, others can give reasons, not everyone will agree all the time, but some will agree some of the time.

At the end of the day I informed the bloke before he actually had the note out of his wallet, he could quite as easily have replaced and given me an English note. And as for Robbie burns, I wouldn't know him if I seen him, so I could quite easily and accidentally accuse someone of trying to pass off a fake note when it was infact legitimate, now that would be embarrassing . sorry but I think this convo has run its course, as I stated we are not gonna agree ;-)

In reply to all the members who are still on about english and scottish fivers etc I think the forum should be used for discussion of fishing and angling items ,not bickering on about currencies. { just my view on the thread},,,,,,Bob.......at the end of the day it is NESA
