Multiplier Reels

Right i have started using a 525 mag never used them before but seem to be a natural at it as never got a nest once,
i just need to know how much shock to put on as Derek did it for me in mine but i got snagged and lost the lot so put some more on but did not seem the same.
is there a nack to how much to put on, i know how much on fixed spools but multi is totally new to me.

i put it the lenth of the rod them 6 times round the reel buti cast otg

i think thats what Derek said now come to think of it, some it like 6 arm lengthsshould be enough.

Twice the length of the rod plus six turns on the reel. Any shorter and if you have a tippy rod / agricultural casting style you risk the knot catching your tip eye as the cast gets away because the rod will still be in recovery. Result: crackoff and massive birdy.

The extra length won't cause you any lost distance. It is also handy to have a longer leader if you are fishing piers / promenades as it means you will get the heavy mono on your reel before lifting a fish out of the water (in fact if I'm fishing the Shields pier I'll usually have a leader even longer than above, learned that lesson after my 15lb line snapped when lifting a good fish a few years back )

i think i had it set at 1 .5 rod length and about 8 turns but sounded like the knot was catching on cast off will have to check not see if knot to big.

Make your leader longer, more time for the rod to recover, less catching on the rings

u neva know when the longer leader will come in handy when hauling a biggie up a pier . my formula twice the rod length plus 8 turns

I usually have one full pass across the spool with the leader, then halfway back to the middle again (just me, but I like the leader in the middle when I cast rather than pulling on one side of the spool, with the knot tucked nicely to one side). I reckon it probably works out about 15-18 turns.

The lads have already pointed out a few advantages of a longer leader, and the extra length also allows for re-tying a fast link or whatever to the end several times should you need to, without the leader becoming too short. For even more length, I prefer a tapered leader, but I'll only use these over relatively clean ground due to the expense! (You get a nice small knot too and don't have to worry about tucking it to the side of the spool to avoid slicing your thumb!).
