Muscle

I can shell them properly... they come out whole but are snotty unlike the formed ones the tackle shops sell.

They just look like under cooked mussels. Formed but not quite cooked.
Ive also par boiled them myself and they come out same as tackle shop ones do.

its not exactly rocket science shelling a mussel is it lol

That said ive only bought mussel from 3 tackle shops

horden, north east tackle hartlepool and friarage hartlepool

all looked the same gear and par boiled

maybe other shops get better fresh gear in. I couldnt say

ive shelled alot of mussle too and yet it never comes out the same as some ive seen in some shops but have used shop bought and it doesnt make a bit of difference they still catch fish regardless ;)

i could collect for nxt 2mths solid an it wouldnt dry up only 2 more tides and thats mine an me m8;s sorted for whole season, dont like collecting in winter

since folk posted about muscle lately our area has had some visits recent collection from a certain area but believe me theres plenty places to collect muscle both rivers or estuarys it isnt hard but the shelling can be a nightmare why some folk take the easy route with par boiling that just opens the shells to give half the battle

I like to shell mine in a tub rather than individual packets..

unlike other baits the more its defrosted and re froze it gets better. Never smells bad and if anything smells fresher strange but true... i just drain off excess water.. quality bait! And the way i do it i think is better.

im shure the gear the tackle shops sell is par boiled for easier shelling.
hardly any scent to it.

they have the same shape as cooked mussel aswell unlike the snotty appearence of fresh shelled.

Dont know which tackle shops you use, but the lads i buy my mussel from certainly do NOT par boil the mussel. To put it plain and simple they just know how to shell mussel.

exactly m8 , ive shelled it for over 35 years without ever par boiling . all you need is a short stumpy knife , cut the 2 tendons first and they fall out the shells.

ive never heard of anyone par boiling the mussels, ive heard of people putting them into fresh water and the mussel then swells up,each to their own

I did read your post, you stated quite clearly you have this impression the mussel sold in tackle shops are par boiled for easier shelling.

I said which tackle shops.... mind you i have bought mussel from tackle shops for 2 years, once i realised doin my own was better.

all im saying is... when its done fresh its nothing like what IVE bought from mentioned shops.

And weather i could get a mussel from its shell whole or not is besides the point.. im on about texture and scent.. this dosnt change wether they slide out in one go or if they get a bit messy.

maybe there is another method used i dont know but when there is money involved there is ofton a short cut taken.

i was voicing my opinion on my own experience.

I know you mean tackle shops.

I am talking also about mussel bought from my tackle shops.
The lad who does my mussel does NOT par boil them before shelling.

The same lad also sells to a number of shops in the north east.
