went musseling this morning with mark and his 2 bairns got some canny mussel with the bigger one covered in barnacles, which gave me loads of scrapes and a few canny cuts on fingers and afew ripped nails , however this big bucket of mussell is waitin to be shelled when i get back home, dont relish the prospect of shelling them as fingers are really sore off the barnacles might teach me to take gloves next time lol

have fun.... once you get into a method it gets easier.

must get myself out and start freezing some down before it gets cold.

doing them yourself means you know that they wernt opened with hot water.

gonna try a few methods
1, conventional way with a knife but very slow on most of them the way i like the mussels stay vibrant orange and not pastey looking
2, then a dozen a quick dip in ho****er then straight into cold 3,. and a dozen left in fresh water for a few hours
4, a dozen in freezer for a hour or 2
then compare them

I don't mind shucking mussels! I always get a big bucketful to keep frozen for the winter and I quite enjoy sitting out in the garden with a beer or ten, just doing my mussels. It is relaxing and therapeutic I think. I use an old Bait knife ground down to make a rounded end. Much easier than a pointed knife.

okay then will bring them round to you next time witn a couple of cans and let you shell them LOL:o

not know the speed the pros do them but a got the shelling down to nearly 4 a from minute instead 2 a minute

Aye there's nee hurry I just shell then till I get sick and sometimes
it doesn't take long :D worst job in the world shelling mussel but it worth it
in the end mate.

i just live 5 minutes walk from the blyth beds so just go get mine fresh when i need them so no need 2 shell bucketfulls & freeze, all i use is a t-spoon that i have grinded a sharp edge to 1 side of the handle 2 open the mussel & grinded an edge on 1 side of the spoon 2 scoop out the mussel, much quicker.
i know a few lads wayback that used 2 keep mussel in a bucket of sea or river water & add oats 2 the water & the mussel would fillter the water through & double in size 2 bursting point.
the more u do it m8 the faster u will get.

sorry 4 l8 reply m8 i will try sort a pic, i just keep all my mussel in 1 of my crab tanks in the shed with a airstone, harder in summer so i just put pop bottles of ice in with them. in winter much easyer i can keep them fresh 4 a few weeks in the tank but just check them every few days for dead 1's.

cheers, with them being filter feeders how often do you change water

Put them in the fridge for a few hours before shelling, It firms them up..makes a hell of a difference

tried that was not impressed , even tried blanching a few for ten seconds to see if any easier shelling , and they were ,and only slightly paler than the ones not, and when frozen you not able to tell the difference

i just cover them with water m8 & change water every 2-3 days, depending on the mussel that is. if i miss a dead 1 it can quickly destort the water.
1 thing i have notice when i am going 2 use that day is the longer i leave them in shells the better, i will peel them 1-2 hours b4 a match & put in2 sealed bags then pop in fridge, most lads i know shell them the night b4 & put in fridge overnight so they soak up the juices but i think most of it is water anyway so do mine b4 i go.
shell mine & put on a cloth then bag & pop in fridge, lash them on with crab so have no probs in flying of the hook.
i do the same thing if going 2 freeze any down, i dry them on a old cloth just 2 get rid of as much of the water as i can then freeze in sealed bags with all air out because water & air is the main cause of freezer burn.
