Mussels

Anyone had any great success with mussels?

Thinking if you keep them for abit they get pretty stinky. if you manage to keep them on the hook then i dont see why they would be a good bait, might rely on using them after a good blow, but stinky juicy looking bait might be good.

Sayin this iv never used them, or ideas?

zigzag a half dozen or more fat fresh ones onto a baiting needle then slide them onto your hook and whip them on with elasticated thread.

Good cocktailed with lug or stuffed inside of squid and give of good scent

Great juicy bulky bait for Cod. and cheep :)

Mussels are a superb bait always have been, always will be.
Used on their own or better still as a cocktail with Crab, Lug, Rag, Squid or whatever takes your fancy, it will work with any of them.
There's not many fish swimming around our coast that will refuse a juicy mussel bait.
Used after a good blow when the water is still dirty is the prime time to be putting out a big mussel bait.
It also has the knack of throwing up a better stamp of fish.
Everyone seems to have their own opinion whether to use fresh or stinky, my opinion as it is on most baits is the fresher the better.
If you can get them fresh keep them in a bucket of seawater (changed regularly) until the day you are going to use them. They don't keep forever but you should manage a couple of weeks.
Skein them before you go fishing and lay them out on newspaper for a couple of hours. This will soak up a lot of water (that's all it is, it's not some fantastic secretion from the mussel itself ) this will harden them up a little and make them a lot easier to hook.
Tie 4-6 decent mussel on your hook and you've got a cracking cod bait.
If you bring any home freeze them down for the next session.
As stated already it's a very underated bait but it's definitely one of the best you can use.

just depends where your fishing ,state of sea like all baits if you have none with you you can bet the guy beside you is catching using them! so carry some if you dont use all freeze them up and keep frozen for next session ,i use cocktail with crab putting the mussel on first then crab over the top makes a big bait
