Mysterious fish Gateshead Stadium

I fished behind Gateshead Stadium from the car park at the bottom of the hill from the Schooner on Sunday for a couple of hours. I was sitting on the bank with the tide nearly full so the water was only a foot from the top and pushing up river. Some other guys were fishing further down and one threw a sandwich crust into the water and I watched it float past being pushed upstream by the tide flow. Just after it past me something took it from the surface with a splash and it was gone, and right behind me just a foot from the edge. Now there were no birds around and no cormorants working the area so whatever took the crust came from underneath. From the sound of the splash it sounded like it was a pound or two. I have been wondering what fish are down the side of the bank there, it must be about 10 feet deep at high tide and straight down.
My thoughts are maybe Grey Mullet or a Coley. The area there looks very 'Mullety' Anyone fished right down the side or seen any fish right on the edge. I was casting towards the middle of the river and I am now wondering what would turn up with some bread trotted up the river on a flooding tide with a carp rod would turn up Maybe we are missing the point and fishing the wrong place !
Any comments ?

(By the way I only caught 2 Tommies and a Flounder so nothing to speak of)

ive seen loads of small codling up to 10in down the side of that wall. they swim up to the top and as soon as you spot them they are off.

last time it was raining heavily and all the storm drains were pouring out. i was really supprised to see numbers of codling coming up to the surface near the wall especially with so much fresh water in the river.

Seen a lot of Salmon jumping at Spillers and at the Green door.
May have been a Sea Trout at the edge.
I know there are Mullet in the river as I have seen hundreds of small ones next to Tynemouth pier (Four posts area) during the summer.
The only way to find out is to try with small hooks and ragworm, bread or a size 10 or 12 black and peacock spider wet fly (used these years ago on Cambois pipe for the mullet)!
Got me thinking now!!!

Plenty of trout jumping on certain beaches around my area at high water on a flat day, I see them all the time and they are big uns aswell...I wont say where for obvious reasons.

Did ya catch it? My money would be on a sea trout or salmon purely as I've not seen any other fish jump in the river. Could be anything though!!

Quite possible it was a chub. One was caught as far downstream as pottery bank a few years ago. The water is still brackish in that area and dace are known to be right down to at least Vickers. A lot of coarse species can tolerate quite a high level of salinity. There is also the halocline in the water where you get freshwater on top and the denser saltywater underneath. This effect is increased when the river is up after rain. This makes it possible to catch sea and freshwater fish in the same area at different depths!

I was fishing facing international paints today and seen a load close in at low water the biggest must of been 3 pound these looked dark on top with orange spots see them all the time but they never go for my hook haha saw the seal today as well tight lines

Was down there on sunday too with the bairns near the boats.Seen bass caught up there in the past.....strange owld river.
