NE Anglers Meeting with Defra 4/3/08

Just thought I'd let you all know that The Northumberland Gazette have published a story on the meeting next week. I was hoping it was going to be in last week, but better late than never. Just hope that as many anglers, and other 'stakeholders' that the RSA strategy will affect become better informed from our local paper than the job that DEFRA have done of informing tackle shops, anglers, tackle manufacturers, hotels, shops, garages etc!
Dave, have you asked DEFRA or can you ask DEFRA why they haven't made as many people aware as should be of the proposals at the meeting

Red5,

I sent the following email on 15/2 to the entire fisheries management team as a direct result of my attempts to get anything done with regard to these.

The email was copied to John Shaw, Martin Salter, Bill Wiggin , NFSA and the angling press.

Dear Nicola,
At the meeting on Nov 15th one of the questions I asked is would Defra be prepared to go out and meet anglers as David Milliband promised they would. He also promised that he would personally meet anglers here in the NE, something that never came to fruition due to his change of position.
The reply was “ we will meet anglers anytime , anywhere, any place”.
I believe I asked would they go to Roker Pier on a Saturday night to speak to anglers and the reply was “ of course,,,anywhere”
At that I commented it would probably be better if we started at the shallow end.
So here we are 3 months later …time running out and you will not confirm a meeting for anglers in the Tyne to Hartlepool area despite several previous requests. The arrangements for the existing planned meetings have already dragged on so long that it is impossible for us to publicise them in the angling press and I now have to contact every club, charter skipper and the media individually to ensure they have heard about the one meeting planned for the NE at Newbiggin which is in the Northumberland SFC region not the NESFC region as you gave the impression in your previous email. The impression I get is that the leafets that were to be a large part of your campaign are not even printed yet.
Perhaps it’s a case of “If we ignore it long enough they will run out of time to arrange anything” ?
Perhaps you have no budget for it…well that budget has got to be far greater than mine as a private individual. If your idea of arranging regional meetings is to send an email to someone who is an unpaid volunteer I would certainly love your job.
The simple question is “ Are you prepared to meet your promises of Nov 15th or not” or is it the intention that the date for responses should come and go with only a half hearted attempt being made to meet the people you promised to talk to. The two meetings arranged for Yorkshire and the NE can hardly be considered a serious attempt at speaking to anglers in two separate SFC regions where a drive of over 225 miles would be needed to go from one end to the other.
I am looking forward to the Angling Summit meeting on Monday where , if given an opportunity, I will be raising this very matter with the Minister.
Yours sincerely
Dave Morton.
SACN NE Regional Coordinator

I did not recieve any reply to this from anyone , not even the NFSA, but it was discussed with Defra at the meeting at Westminster. I was told they would do their best to get the promised leafets to me in time to hand out at the Amble open.....guess they must have got lost in the post.

The chance to bring this up with the Minister did not arise since time with the Minister is rare and precious and by the time BASS had their say on bass , and the NFSA had their say on bass, and the sacn had their say on bass...there was no time left to discuss the future as people are still busy making accusations about the past.

The only good thing to come out of that email is a major government department now know Northumberland is not a place in Yorkshire.

When the meeting is over I will be sending a full blow by blow to the opposition parties as if we dont get what we want we need to take it to the MP's.

Cheers
Dave

all this goverment wants is our hard earned cash
they dont give a ****e about anglers/there troops with no ammo or body armour/they just want train fares and taxi rides for free
enock powel was right
this country has gone to the dogs

Too true Gazzawill.....The gazette has also been running a story for the past 3 weeks about county councillors up our way awarding themselves payrises of £30,000 per year to take their wages up to £180,000, their golden handshakes and pensions guaranteed while all us mugs (don't even ask about mugs) who struggle to pay our council tax and continue to moan about it and do and say nothing. APATHY. Same with the price at the pumps, energy bills, crime, NHS, immigration and education. Are we going to let them take away one of the last pleasures we have or continue to let them roger us like the submissive population we've all suddenly become.
Has anyone seen a film by George Lucas called the 'Dark Crystal'? Those in power are like the skexies, we're like the little folk that they drain the life force out of and keep as slaves for their gratification.....Christ I'm starting to sound like Charlie T.

We've all sat back too long and done nowt and this is our chance as anglers to try and make our point. The more I hear and find out about DEFRA, the more I can see how people who work tirelessly for our rights (DAVE, LEON, LOOPY etc) the more I fear for our hobby.

Red make sure you take the pills before I give you a lift to the meeting on Tuesday. The Gazette article was much better than I anticipated after talking to the Essex lad from the paper, we must keep banging away until we are completely Rogered, DEFRA will always do as they are told by the government of the day we have to convince them they may not be the government of the day if they continue along the Shaw line excuse the pun

Lol Loopy....do you mean the Travel pills for your drivin or the Ritalin to make me behave.

Thought just came to me yesterday after a discussion with Dave. How are we, as a individuals or small groups (members of SACN, NFSA etc) supposed to compete with the budgets, infrastructure etc of the Commercial fleet, environmental organisations I.e National Trust, RSPB, Nature England to fight for our place at the table. Many anglers I know are not interested in the Marine Bill and how it will affect them, most thinking it will never happen. We have different angling organisations that can't agree on things.
Don't know about other peoples views but maybe now is the time that we are going to have to subscribe to some sort of organisation that will represent us rather than expecting individuals to fund out of their own pockets a cause that involves all of us.

Matchman, that would cover the southern half of the County, but us Northerners probably wouldn't have gone. As far as I am aware it was only because a couple of people in the Northern half, came up with the idea and it took off from there. Nothing stopping others doing similar things around the coastline, in fact the more people that tried to get these meetings with DEFRA the better as it would let them know that we aren't just a small group.

A lot of effort was put into trying to get a meeting at Seaham however it proved impossible due to the delaying tactics of defra.

I did enquire with Seaham club about using their excellent facilities however they did say that their insurance would probably not cover such a meeting.

As an aside it find it ironic that a sea angling club does not have a licensed bar and yet the attached scout hall does :)

In my opinionIt is still possible for a meeting to be arranged at Seaham or there abouts and have emailed the NFSA to ask them if they could push the issue with Defra.

regards
Dave

There are probably more anglers from the Tyne to the Tees, don't you think?

Maybe so....but that doesn't mean to say that our voice is less important than those in the South. It was the fact that people up this way put plans into motion to organise a meeting to inform anglers and other relevant people of the proposals. Newbiggin is between the Northern part of Northumberland and Southern so it's fairly central. From my perspective, I'd have preferred it further North, but am just grateful that it is going ahead at all and it will 'hopefully' give anglers an informed opinion of what is being proposed

If those between the Tyne and the Tees didn't want to attend or can't attend for any other reason, then there is no stopping them organising a meeting down that way.

Matchman this started life as a meeting at a working mans club in Amble the headquarters of Amble Sea Anglers along with interest from the Alnwick Club lads. It was to purely to get information of what the RSA for England strategy response was about and how the Marine Bill could affect our sport. Whilst looking for help and reading past post on NESA I realized some work had been done by you guys I believe Sless and DaveM had meetings and things were promised up here all to no avail. to cut a long story short Beddlington club offered there premises as it was felt to be in the middle of Northumberland and fair to all locally, I know Dave has made something happen and I hope to get my questions answered as a result. Had the meeting been in your area I for one would of been happy to travel down.

Sadly I can't make it - I'm in Peterborough - but have friends who are attending - so hopefully some good will come of it...good luck to all who are attending, maybe we will get some answers to some prevailing questions...(but I still have my doubts once the beer starts to flow!)

Lol...matchman. The beer may give people dutch courage to speak up but lets not turn it into a free for all. I think as anglers we are all much too mature for that and if the majority are driving then there hopefully won't be much drunk other than soft beverages

Matchman,
If you look at post 23 that is when I finally gave up trying to arrange a second meeting in the NE.

The Newbiggin meeting was a compromise in terms of location in that both Alnwick and Amble club agreed that as far as arranging a meeting that was probably the best we would get.

A meeting further south between the tyne and the tees was tried for but without any back up from the local clubs, the NE NFSA or the Northern Fed it is very easy for Defra to ignore emails from one person.

Where are all these anglers wanting a meeting south of the tyne when it actually comes down to arranging something?

I copied the emails sent to Defra to everyone I have in my address book with a hope that someone from the media, NFSA or a club would take this up with Defra. After all they are running and chairing these meetings not me.

Over the weekend it became clear that anglers south of the Tyne are not happy with what has been arranged, but if some of those people were to contact Defra there is still a possibility that a second meeting could be arranged.

As I understand it you write for an angling publication, but IMHO Defra deliberately delayed any organisation of meetings beyond the point where it was possible to have any publicity in the angling press and therefore inform anglers as to what is going on.

Perhaps someone from the south of the tyne would like to comment or perhaps offer to help arrange a meeting.

Cheers
dave

Matchman,

I spoke to Joe in early february about a meeting but at that time the intrest was minimal. I look forward to meeting him tomorrow and will give him all the help possible to arrange a second meeting. The problem is the time scale. responses need to be in by 31st march so to have any relevance a meeting would need to take place before then.

The meeting will be chaired by Defra.

Introductions followed by a presentation by the Fisheries protection guys from the apparently soon to be extinct Northumbrian sea fisheries committee.

A presentation by Defra then a question and answer session open to all that attend.

I have had my chance in the past to say my bit to Defra and this is a chance for as many others as possible to say their bit. There are of course some questions I would love to see asked as I have heard the answers given at meetings in London and would like to see those questioned answered on a more local basis so that NE anglers can hear them and form an opinion of their own.

Cheers
Dave

Im from south shields and going to the meeting, ive got a couple of spare seats in the motor if anyone wants a lift. I'll look in again 2nite after my comp to see if anyone wants a ride.

If anyone wants to keep this in their favourites then please do it now as I will be unsticking it soon as it no longer needs to be stuck.
