Hi,
You don't HAVE to have any.
I would get insurance as if you hit someone else's boat, or struck a swimmer you could be in a world of trouble. It is a small expense compared to what yo must have paid for your boat.
A RYA level two only takes two days, I did mine at Sunderland Marina. This is referred to sometimes as a boat ldriving license, and whilst not mandatory is very useful.
It means when abroad you can hire a boat. Plus more and more slipways are saying you must have tha level two and insurance before you can launch. In North Wales ALL council owned slipways demand both.
The course is a good way to meet local boat users and see how they do things.

the seahogs are cracking little boats very stable as stated you dont need insurance but its nice to know you are covered for damages etc should anything happen all you need is life jackets, flares , first aid box , vhf radio etc if you know anyone that has a boat ask them to come out with you so they can show you the ropes etc i would also advise you take a spare engine {4 or 5 hp} incase your main engine fails this can be a real life saver as said enjoy your boat

as deno says a second engine is a life saver. as for insurance you dont need it but for the sake of around £55 for 3rd party. a year you will be sill not to as if you are sunkken in a river and causeing a danger to outher shiping the port will chage you a frotune to removed it. and damage to outher boats anit that cheep eather. . i got a life ring and a old jaket if you want them . as for first box mine came from work. and fire extinguishers you tend to fined nice and cheep at car boot sales

Seahog Hunters are great boats, that’s what I started with.
As far as I know, all the places round here where you can launch from will require proof of insurance before you launch. Watch out that it doesn’t cover you while towing and most car insurance only provides limited or no cover for a boat on tow.
