New Boat Rod?

Hi Lads,

Just after some advice as I'm considering buying a new boat rod. I've been using Greys G Series Boat Rod - 20-30Lb to date which isn't a bad rod.

I'm looking at three rods in particular:

Sonik SK3
Sonik SK4
Penn Powerstix Pro - I see Gerry's do a combo deal with a Penn 220GTO reel for £94.99.

To date I've been using mono but I will be using braid from now on. I see the Sonik SK4 is a specialised rod for using braid but surely the results will be just as good with either of the two other rods? Anyone out there got either of the above mentioned rods ~ any good? What would you recommend?

In addition should I go for a 12-20Lb Rod?

Any advice would be appreciated, cheers Mike

I've not used any of the Sonic rods mate but I have heard that their gear is great and would always advise using braid from the boat .

I bought a Penn 220 gto for this season but haven't used it yet due to working too often but on first sight it does seem a bit cheap and flimsy :exclam:

Ugly stick boat rods are great and a good few of the lads swear by Fladden Maxximus rods ...I bought one and only used it a couple of times ,they have very very thin blanks while not impacting on breaking strength so they might be worth a look.

Hi, fished over in norway this summer, two of my mates took the new sonik rods (sk3 / sk4) Have to say they were both very impressed with them, the sk4 braid rod seemed like the better of the two, but u would expect this as its dearer! Both rods are very thin and light, and ideal for mono or braid. I use the fladden maxximus which u can pick up for the same price as the soniks, this is almost a spinning rod, but with plenty of power for bigger fish.
The only problem with these ultra light and thin rods, is if u are pirking with heavy lures, no good on the arms and back! however light tackle is the way forward and I would definatley reccomenend these rods.

I can confirm that Big Sid's rod is brand spanking new, i am sure he woudl use it but has to much love for his old fav. £40 a bargin :)

Hi Sid, I'll buy the Sonik of you. I'm currently in Singapore and due to be back in "The Chosen Land" around the 9th October. I reside up near Ashington but can easily travel to arrange to pay & collect. Can you just confirm the rod capacity? I preseume it's 12-20LB or 20LB-30LB? I know you say it's new but when did you actually buy it - just out of interest.

Cheers, Mike

Cheers lads for the advice, I think I'll buy Sid's SK4 and no doubt will continue to buy a few more rods within the near future, the collection is coming along well. Just out of interest what would you recommend between a 12-20Lb to a 20-30Lb class rod. I presume a 12-20LB would suffice?

Cheers, Mike
