New pump Required.

Well i got round to stripping the raw water pump off the boat today. I've took it aprart and the seals are worn and so is the shaft :(, so i've decided instead of risking just replacing the seals i'm going for a new pump.

The pump is a Johnson F7B-903, i know its a long shot but does any one know the Jabsco equivilent part number. I'm waiting for a call from Storrar with a price, but one price on the net was £377 :o.

thats a bit of a kick in the henry halls:(seems awfully expensive, but i am out of touch with prices:confused: it wont be long before you get the info you need on here:exclam:

Yes LK, but thats boats, money pits :(. I looked at a replacement shaft but they're obsolete now. Still it'll be worth it when i'm out haulin the fish in :D

be a lot cheaper to recon the one you've got. seal kit, impeller and bearings, which any bearing supplier should be able to match depending where the shaft is worn, a bearing shop might be able to then find staged bearings a few thou bigger if thats where the worn bit is

Hi Mark, the worn part is where the water seal seats on the shaft, but i've been on another forum site and a lad on there reckons if i change the seals annually i should get away without changing the whole unit, so i'm going to call in at a oil seal retailer at ashington where i'm working on monday.

The impeller was changed last February and it looks newish, and there is no play on the bearings so i'll chance the seals and keep an eye out for any leaks.

The shaft on Shady's pump was a bit marked, in fact the knackered bearing was seized on. New bearings & seal and it's working fine.

An annual seal change will do it, unless your running every day. ask em their advice, might be able to fit a slightly over/under sized seal to take up the wear

If they're not leaking after a year Kieth and i can get away with it that will do me.

Mark the number on the seals are 17287 which i thought was a part number but it turns out to be the size, 17mm i/diam, 28mm o/diam, 7mm deep. so do you think if i dropped the inside diam to 16mm it might be better.

I'd just try the correct size seal (they are only a couple of quid).

If that doesn't work you could possibly get the shaft ground down to 16mm.

Think I'd just bite the bullet Chris, circa 10`s of £K's boat against £350 pump? get a new one, fit it and forget it (for 5-6 years anyway), painful I know but so is the worry ...... and of course you end up with almost a full set of spare parts ...

I'm waiting for 2 call backs tomorrow Norman, with prices for a new pump. I know exactly what you mean, peace of mind and not looking for drips every time you come in from fishing.

I'm not worried about the price, its more the lead in time for the suppliers to get one,( few weeks they said ), so i'll get a couple of seals tomorrow, get the pump re-fitted and then i'm ready for fishing, while i wait for a new pump coming, plus i'll also have a spare, which is a good thing.:D

Good luck with that Chris, hope everything works out.
