New Years Eve Lunker from Blyth pier

Decided to fish Blyth pier again on my annual Old year's Night / New Year's morning session.

Started at 8:20pm about 60yds from the bend and got stuck in a massive lump of weed on the first cast.
It was that big I could hardly move it and ended up snapping, losing a canny bit of line.

After that I moved around the bend to about half way along towards the end.
Got a couple of small bites using blacks/squid wrap on my second cast but came to nothing.

I decided to try a whole squid on a 5/0 pulley pennel rig to see what would happen.
The bait was only in the water about 5 mins when my rod gave an almighty thump and got a lot of slack line, I reeled down to it and felt another thump, so I hit it.
I thought I had missed the fish as when I was reeling, I could not feel any weight until it got near to the pier and all hell broke loose with a lot of lunging.

I had not seen the fish but knew it was too big to try and lift or hand ball, so I started walking it down the pier.
I had to go under a few rods to try and beach the fish.
As I reached the bend, I asked the lad that was fishing there (I now know is Critchaz from this site) to help me land the fish.
He went out of his way to help me, he went the whole length of Blyth pier and went a long way underneath the pier to get the fish for me.
I would have beached it but my line got snagged on a protruding lump of timber part way down the straight (it was panic stations).

Looking at the fish from that high up at only an hour into the flood, the fish looked around 6lb.
When Critchaz fetched it up the pier to me I could not believe my eyes.
We weighed the fish with some cheapo scales that only showed in Kg and it went a smidgen over 4Kg.
I have since weighed the fish on a decent set of scales and I am pleased to say, my personal best is now 9lb 6oz.

I can't thank you enough Critchaz m8 for going and retrieving that fish for me, it is much appreciated.

Here's a pic that Critchaz took....

Excellent fish mate, very welldone on the new pb. New there would be fish there last nyt after is died off. well done to critchaz for going out of his way to help you land it.

well done, i really wanted to fish blyth last night but decided against it due to the weather forcast so stayed local and fished the rathouse instead, i knew blyth pier would probably chuck a pig out. all i got for my efforts on the ratty was a cod just under 2lb and a 1lb flounder. just didn't fancy getting the car stuck in snow on new years eve.

A massive well done Dazzer beautiful fish and top knotch fishing not being daft going for the lift it's just not worth it and your a shinning example of what to do, spot on to your helper it's a huge help when your arms are aching walking along mine were and mine was only 6lb 6oz:)
