Newby Question

Hey all, new guy here.

I am planning on buying a boat in the next month or two and thought it was about time I did my homework. Can you guys please let me know what I may probably need or need to look out for?

I'm not comming in blind here so know you need stuff like, VHF Licence, charts, gps, insurance etc. I would just like some help or pointers to the best places to go in order to not miss something out. Oh BTW I live in Blyth will be moaring/launching from there.

Hi joostan and welcome to NESA, I'm sure you will get plenty of help from the regular boat lads. Don't forget one item you missed off your list though, your safety gear, just as important as everything else on there.

when buying a second hand boat there is a few important things you should look at here is a few examples

if its a moulded boat make sure its the original gel coat as people paint them to hide holes/damages etc

check the wheel bearings on the trailer because if its been standing a while they tend to cease up and when towing could cause major problems

get the owner to start the engine up and make sure it is blowing cold water from the tell tail hole at the top of the enjine leg this is to prove the water is flowing over the enjine to stop it over heating etc

when towing the boat make sure you have a tail board and the boat is firmly strapped to the trailer

life jackets and flares are a must at sea also a compass a vhf radio or moblie phone is also vital

get yourself a powder fire extingusher and keep it on the boat at all times along with a first aid box

its always best when you are buying a second hand boat to get somebody that knows about boats to come along with you so they can give a second opinon

As its my first boat I was thinking between 18-21ft. I think thats probably the right size to out on the wrecks with. Dont really want a smaller one as think it might be a little too unstable out there.
 
Hi joostan, welcome to nesa. I think the closest place to shop if you are in the Blyth area, is P.A. Lynch at Coopies lane Morpeth. You will get everything you need there. They are holding an "open try a boat" weekend at Sunderland marina on the 24th-25th April from 10am. There will be lots of information and good crack from many of the members on this site. Good luck. Thanks for all the good tips mate. I've just been offered a 28ft Ex Lifeboat for a few grand so going out on Wednesday night to see what its like.

Think of a cost then double it, there's always something else to pay for. Work out how you want to use the boat and then take plenty of time look for the right boat and be prepared to travel for it.

I've spoken to John Scott today from RNLI so popping over tonight to speak to him for advice and he's gona take a look at me boat as well.
 
Yes all good points above, its never an easy thing and i drove down to Torque marina and back in one day to see mine then sort the transport thats about 1 grand, not a great deal of choice with boats up our way.

You are forever doing things with the boat, spending money ,working on them etc but the good days at sea make it worth it.

I will be on the look out for a new boat around September time if work still ok, so like you will be going through it all again with the added thing of selling my current boat.
 
Well depending on work i would be looking for a 625 with the volvo penta engine or if they hard to come by a Arvor 225 but the off set cabin puts me off them abit.
Would be looking for one around 1-4 years old in canny nick, with the sale of stingray and a few grand more its fingers crossed one come up.
 
The Ocqueteaus are proving to be a popular choice down at the RQ, another arrived in the yard just after Stingray left.
I’d recommend the transporter that I used earlier this year, for both reliability and price. Let me know if you want contact details and I’ll dig them out.

Why does the AS cabin put you off Rich? I fancy a 215AS , you can still get them with a standard central cabin as well , but I'd have thought the AS version would be ideal for us who drift fish all the time , everyone fishing along the same side of the boat from bow to stern?
There's a 645 just appeared on ebay from the tyne , 2002 115hp and £19.5k .

Just not a fan of them really, not real reason just like a central cabin.
Full season to go yet before any thoughts of a change really and the season starts Sunday if the weather is nice.
 
think there will be 50,000 appointments at sjp saturday norman, me one of them.
but think i will be a bit rough for fishing sunday cos staying oot on toon.
