Newton Haven fishing bait collecting

alright alan,has someone been off on there high horse again ref bait digging,i hope not! its great getting out and getting some worms yourself especially costing as much as they do but unfortunatley we seem to be losing just about every form of venue thats available,its about time all these political type scoundrels took a good look at the world around our angling, they would probably get a good eyeopener of how much we can actually put back into the nations economy if we can continue to enjoy our sport, and if this means digging a few worms for the purpose then let us get on with it,and stop this ban nonsense,after all a lot of us are responsible enough to surely look after the beach in the interests of conservation. cheers korky.

i always thought thier was a restriction because of the sea mouse or what ever you call it as soon as you went over to dig you where threatened with the police [nice to no this is,nt true cheers alan.
spoke to national trust warden today, a new one, she is adamant that bit digging is banned and that they OWN, OWN Newton haven, until i told her National Trust lease Newton from the Crown Estates. Please be polite if you are asked to move and if they get the police let them, they know the score by now.

Unless anglers speak out or do something to have themselves heard regarding MCZ's MPA'z that may well be the reality!
Better organised groups have all had their say, RSPB, NE, NT etc, whilst progressive thinking anglers have struggled to get support from many anglers, tackle shops manufacturers etc.

me & a m8 were moved on last year by the cops & some bloke rom the National Trust as we were salting razor not digging. he said it was summit 2 do with the protection of sea
potatoes.
i spoke 2 1 of the coppers as we walked along the beach & he said if it was down 2 them then they dont see any halm in what we were doing & they were sick of getting called out off this bloke.
it was'nt long & we were back lol

Can you dig worms at budle bay ? I seem to remember some lads from whitley bay got charged a few years back,
not sure what the outcome was but im sure i read an article a while back saying you can dig worms anywhere on the foreshore, some old old law, but probably the way things have changed not anymore

It's a protected bird area and digging is not allowed. Read a few articles over the years of diggers landing themselves hefty fines.
OK, it is not against any bye law to dig at Low Newton. I have checked with NE (Natural England) and just to put you all straight the only two places are Budle Bay i.e. the National Park Bye Law made through Natural England and Boulmer Haven through Alnwick now Northumberland County Council. Low Newton is a SSSI as is most of that coast, my understanding is it is leased from the Duke of Northumberland and not owned by the NT. Bait digging is classed as an unconsented activity by NE and possibly the NT. If you look at the NT web site for Low Newton they advertise it as a good place to fish. Remember Alnwick V Anderson ruled that the collection of bait was ancillary to the right to fish. I am awaiting a call back from the NT Warden, I am sure they would like to discourage bait digging but it is not against any bye law yet. I believe the NT may have the power to create a bye law but it would have to be advertised and go for public consultation at some stage. This I would suggest may happen if it became a haven for commercial diggers. I am away for a few days as is Alan and we will update you as soon as possible.

What bait can you dig at newton like
hi alan this is mick hardy from the blyth club me and my mate were moved on from a spot at holy island just last week by the warden he got very aggressive with my mate as he asked us to stop digging anyways as we didnt no our rights and he came up with alsorts of stuff we found it best to move on he told us there was a spot just of the main drag but when we tryed it it was total crap so my point is if i return i can tell him to jog on as u said they only lease the land and the crown own it.

As far as Iam aware (and I am sure someone may verify this) you can dig bait anywhere around the island apart from Budle Bay as long as you are not within 100 feet of the causeway.
Probably not a good idea to dig on the left hand side of the causeway (as you look at the island) as the area was used as a range during the war for pilots dropping all sorts of ordanance and live explosives regularly turn up.
