As you all know by now, other than captain the North to greatness and manage a week in Scotland in the summer when the arthritic tendancies are somewhat relieved I don't fish as much as I should.
I do, however, now and again, on a whim, treat the wife to a seaside break and one of her Christmas treats was 3 days in Norfolk, part of the country we rarely visit, my only fishing experience being at Kessingland - a 500 mile round trip to catch dozens of whiting averaging about 6ozs, on 60 lb line. Unfortunately, due to the propensity of alcohol, what was to be a treat the day after Boxing Day turned into the 27th, 28th and 29th of January (DO NOT BOOK THINGS ON THE INTERNET WHEN PI**ED she said) so we're just back.
We stayed at Gorleston, a typically featureless Norfolk beach where there were half a dozen rods out - no fish. I dropped Eileen off at the shops and went to Great Yarmouth - 4 rods, no fish. We had a drive up to Caister which has a very impressive RNLI base. One boat beached while we were there - 4 rods, no fish (unless they thought I was the IFCA guy and were hiding them). Visited Lowestoft and there were a few rods on the pier - no fish. Watched a small Charter come ashore and the skipper was taking photos of 3 anglers with 4 or 5 codling on the deck, best maybe 5lb.
So things in the NE aren't as bad as they could be. Now where's that silver polish?
