could try smiths dock, can access this next to ferry landinng or can drive down to other side next to marina at royal quays and access by climbinf the two fences.
Had some decent cod from smiths dock. not too snaggy either. small lob will see you get a few whiting if using macy or bluey

I would not advise climing fences with a 4 year old kid.
Drive down if gate is open.;)

oops sorry didnt see that part lol. well there is railing that can be fished without having to climb over any fences still had few fish from this side.

You could try St Anthony's tar works (Pottery Bank) it is just a little further up the river towards the mouth from Walker riverside park. To get there just head as if you were going to Walker riverside park (coming from Newcastle). Don't turn right at the lights drive a further 80 yds an turn right and go all the way down. There is a nice section of promenade with fish less than 20 yards out
