mackerel.... is it real fishing? any idiot can catch them! just throw something shiny within 100 yards of them and you can't fail....

well i had my 6th mackerel bashing session of the summer today. guess how many..... 30? 20? 10? no. 0. none. zero. oh, and that's in total over the 6 sessions! i must be the worst angler on nesa. mackerel are undoubtedly the hardest fish to catch. no, really, it's actually easier to catch codling.

i've fished for mackerel 6 times* this year and caught none, but fished for codling 15 times and caught 12.

last year i fished for mackerel 10 times and caught 10, but fished for codling 68 times and caught 85.

so there you have it, conclusive proof that codling are easier to catch than mackerel.

* ps i know it's my own fault, i can't be bothered to go at dawn or dusk, don't like fishing in a crowd and i usually get bored and go home if i haven't had a bite after half an hour. must try harder!

macky

macky

where you been fishing mate its very hit and miss at the moment with the macky down at hartlepool east winds not helping either making the water dirty

set meself with a target no rod n reel just a handline have managed 20 mackerel so far im eating well with freinds so far :D

I must admit I haven't even tried for them yet this year Iain - reports have been far too hitty-missy to encourage me out. Mind you, I was planning to have a go this week with the bigger tides coinciding with early mornings - but at the moment I'm more concerned with gathering our little side-walking friends as the numbers have finally been picking up!

Gary :)

Just got back in , fished for hour and half ,midway between brigade hut and the gate on ssp .Had 3 while the steady stream of lads with rods headed to the end.
Nice morning out

Ya only gunna get them if they are there but got to say mackerel are far easier to catch than cod.

ya never ever gunna get 50+ cod in a session.

granted thats because they arnt there in that sort of numbers but thats why macky are so easy to catch.

ill take you macky bashing you take me codding coz i know whos shoes id rather be in lol

I know what you mean: I've been spinning about half a dozen times and achieved nothing.

I had to get the monkey off my back so Tuesday morning I got down to Roker for an hour between 5 & 6 with feathers and got about 10 (kept four decent sized ones). There wasn't much doing but the Fladden Shrimp seemed to hit the spot.

that's true, i never will, but i'm old enough to remember a time when some did!
back in the 80's one of the whitley bay club comps was won with (something like) 53 codling for 64 lb. i can't even get that in a whole winter league!

You are not on your own, 2 weeks ago I went down to Roker thinking I could not fail. Fished with my light 10 foot carp rod and spinner with a couple of daylights as teasers. Fished for about 2 hours a day for 4 days on the trot and did not get a single touch even though Mackerel were being pulled in, sometimes in 2's and 3's. Went home completely depressed. The next week I went down to Shields with the the big guns, my beachcaster, best distance reel and strings of daylights and caught 8 in 30 minutes and had to pack in I was catching too quick, 3 or 4 at a time !

As far as I can see the problem is that most of the fish are 100 yards or so out (certainly on on Roker) and only the good casters with daylights are reaching them.

Same at Hendon on Saturday, I fished 4 hours with lug and rag for a small 3 inch Dab then at the end I put daylights on and wacked them as far as I could just to see if any Mackerel were there, and caught one Mackerel in 4 casts and that was as soon as I hit the water at a distance of about 80 to 100 yards.

Just my findings.

i remember that year... in hartlepool we were getting loads of just size codling with a lot more just under.

we had lads weighing in 35 codling for a 3.1/2 hr match.

lads were reporting hooking up to 100 fish off parton prom but most were just undersize.
