Been reading the posts on here (and on other forums) and there is an increasingly urgent need to decipher the words.
Why can't people (not ppl) write "before" instead of B4 and "mate" instead of M8 and "any" instead of ne
Maybe it's my increasing age and that all schools are now teaching this "new" language but to be honest I often give up through a post and skip it if it's got this abuse of the english language in it.
Not looking for queens english or perfect grammar, just something I can read without a texty dictionary.

Fire away .........

it's not that they are taught it Norman it's that the schools aren't allowed to correct them for fear of denting Jilly or Jonnys confidence...same with "non competitive" sports days

as to the use of text speak, I personally feel it's a combination of "the norm" and borderline illiteracy in a lot of cases

A few people should try this:

Absolutely hate it. on a mobile keypad maybe there's maybe an excuse, but I still hate that as well, but when someone is sat in front of a full keyboard

m8 is one of the ones I hate the most

and when you get emails with stupid text speak... I have been know to just return them straight back with a 'please can you type this in english'

I would'nt say I hate it but I do dislike it immensely  :D If you all dislike it, none of you are forced to respond to it ;)

Tony, which schools are not allowed to correct them for using it in case of denting their confidence? Also, which schools have the non competitive sports days? There are none around my area. Urban myth's perhaps?

Jim.

My 8 year old Niece living in Chorlton Manchester recently underwent one Jim...designed more for the taking part than for the competition IE no-one is aloser or a winner...which in my eyes is all wrong as how is a child supposed to know when they are crap at something? one lesson in the harsh reality of life that they are being deprived of IMHO

as to teachers not being allowed to correct the child, OK they are allowed to correct them - but the child cannot be marked down for bad grammar which is tantamount to the same thing in my eyes - this is from my friend who is the head of history at Monkseaton High School and understandably very frustrated

They have been doing non competitive sports in primary schools for a long time now, but only primary in this area (to the best of my knowledge) I don't know about any other areas but have never heard of it, something else that is always neglected to be mentioned by the press.

As far as not being able to mark them down, that is a completely different thing from not being able to correct them for fear of denting their confidence :D. I know for a fact it is not and never has been allowed, at the school where SWMBO works.

mebbes I'm just getting old but it just weren't like that in my day and I'm only 33 :o :D

Military School from age 13, National Service from 16 for minimum of 5 years is what I say :D

Got to admit I am guilty of doing it at times. Just getting lazy in my old age I suppose.
I have looked back over my posts and I have used the abreviation of M8 instead of mate, so yes I am guilty.
I promise not to do it any more. I should know better at my age.
It does get annoying trying to read text with too much ( text speak) in it.
Your right Tony, a few years National Service would do them the world of good.

Live and let live,as long as the message gets over. It is a real good way of disguising a basic gap in their knowledge of spelling and sentence composition though !!!!!

John

ps I have got into the habit of using LOL and :-) but that is about as far as it goes

I'm in the against text speak boat simple as that its a pain and i think its just lazy and cant be bothered syndrome:rolleyes:

So you think its not "kewl" then LOL Joking aside a good friend of mine works in an HR department and has told me that they actually have received job applications written in text hieroglyphics. Needless to say they did not get the job !!!!!

On one forum I know it is banned all together. The reason being that blind people are not able to understand it. Apparently there is a reader that people with any sort of seeing difficulty's can use to read on the internet and it does'nt recognise text speak at all. I can't remember what the system is called but I will try to find out.

Jim.

Lol Norman, I would imagine that would happen if they had hearing difficulty's too. I know what the date is but it isn't a wind up mate, honest ;). I'll try to find the name of the reading programme.

Jim.
