Okuma Magnetix MG-20CS

Does anyone ave a Okuma Magnetix MG-20CS?

I've just bought a second hand one off ebay and have a query regarding the clutch. If you disengage the clutch (i.e. move the clutch arm to off for casting) should it automatically re-engage (to on) when you turn the handle 0.25 to 0.5 of a turn when reeling in line?

I ask as mine doesn't and I have to manually re-engage the clutch by moving the lever. However, I checked a brand new model in the tackle shop and it engages automatically.

So, has mine got a fault or was there an early model that has a manual clutch lever?

Many thanks

see below post i was wrong oops

was so long ago i had my okuma

still a bad design all reels should be manual to stop the spool engaging

They do automatically click back up when u start reeling just lije the smaller type with the button clutch early 6500

I have a problem with my 30 cs when i cluck the lever down amd make tge cast the handle spins mid-cast and re-engages the clutch causing the lead to fly out at 100mph only to swing back at your feet

Had it into amble angling and thry reckon it was suppose to do that but why would it

Lug,

So, my reel must be an earlier model than the one I saw in the shop on Saturday?

Its a nice reel and looks mint. Got it for £37. However I thought the previous owner had busted it and sold it on, when I saw that the shop model engaged automatically when turning the handle.

The shop has offered to sell me a new one for £50. So was debated getting a refund from the seller to put towards buying it. However, from what you say, my real might be a better desing than the new one.

Cheers. :)

David,

Lug removed his post. So, the handle should engage automatically as designed by Okuma?

Well, if mine doesn't does that mean its been modified/broken? It may be better for me that it doesn't automatically engage but I'm concerned that if its broken, is there other things that are likely to break soon also?

It may be broken im not too sure put it into your lical tackle shop for a service and see if they can work out why it doesnt engage as all the ones i have seen DO
Yes it should engage once you have turned the handle theyre a canny reel and very fast ive only use mine 3 sessions i should send it back but dont have a reciept/proof of purchase

If you feel confident taking reels apart have ago but make sure it goes back in the same way
From everyone iv spoke to i think im the only person that doeant like them maybes because of the problem ive manged to come across

David,

Cheers mate, I don't want to take it apart in case I don't get it back together correctly. The seller has offered a refund, so I think I'll take him up on it. Don't want to pay for a service on top of the £37 already spent when I can get the brand new one for £50.

Just didn't want to return it if it was working as designed. But after seeing the shop one, it looks like mine isn't working as designed.

im still sure the older models were manual engage

just cant remember that far back lol

wait for others to reply first

No bother mate for the sake of £13 id take the bloke up on the refund and have a brand new reel
Dont take nowt apart if you not 100% sure of gettin it together again lol

Lug i didnt even know there was an older model

Can't understand why they'd change from a manual engage to an automatic engage. The seller says its fine and in perfect working order but seeing the new one auto engage makes me concerned. If I knew that Okuma changed the design then I'd happily accept the reel. Just don't want to pay for a service for them to say something is busted.

Cheers Dave, that's what I'm thinking. Then at least I'd have the 5 year guarantee to give piece of mind also.

Mine and all the ones ive seen are auto engage if your unsure drop an email or call okuma direct

5 year garuntee ?? I never new that if im not covered by veals okuma should repair or replace mine

Rocketman,

That's what I like to hear.

So even if mine hasn't been busted, its been doctored to be a manual engage. I think I'll take the refund just in case other things have been tampered with.

Ive just tried to contact okuma about my reel and this is what the contact us page says

ASIA Head Office and Factory Contact Information Head Office and Factory OKUMA / TAIWAN

If you have any question for the products or service, please contact local Okuma agent and we will offer the requisite service shortly.

Possibly going to be harder than i anticipated

i sold mine in 30-06-2009 so maybe they changed it

know the date as i checked my pms lol

David, Lug, Rocket Man,

Many thanks for your replies. I'll go with the majority and what I've seen with the reel in the shop. The evidence is stacked in favour that it should auto engage. I've bought the new reel from "North East Tackle Supplies" in Ryhope Sunderland. It was their last 20CS. So many thanks to them also for their advice also.

I'm just getting back into sea fishing after an 8 year layoff for one eason or another. As you can imagine, my old gear although usable, is very much out of date.

Cheers guys.
