Okuma Magnetix MG-20CS

Autoengage on a Multi? Not good. If im honest i would hate it. I can see it engaging mid cast and causing lots of problems and pain (For me). Thats the reason both 525 Mags, and Slosh's are manual engage. Its no big deal having to flick it over after a cast, i dont like it when my fixed spool sometimes flicks over, i cant imagine it with a multi and a 5-6oz lead :O

Cheers Where's the fish?

With the reel, it was more a case that it wasn't working as designed as nobody could confirm for definate that there was an "early" model where it was a manual engage.

That raised the questions, 1. Had it been doctored from Auto to Manual or 2. Had something broke inside?

Either way, my confidence in it was dented. I didn't want to open it or pay for a service as the seller offered a refund. Turns out he'd also bought it second hand 3 months ago and was now selling it on. So I can't be fully sure of its history.

The seller, has now also offered to give me £10 refund and I keep the reel. Not sure what to read in to that. A very genuine guy, compensating for the issue, or he just doesn't want it back?

Doesent matter how genuine he seems mate , if its been doctored stay away from it. And the reason he offered you a tenner back and you keep the reel is probably because he doesent want it either. And selling it on will be harder for him to do.

If you want a decent reel, i would recomend you keep an eye on the Sales section on here, lots of bargins on reels going on. And its very rare you get scam merchants on here :) Any 525 515 Penn Mag reel (Slidy) and a Slosh 30 will be a better bet. I dont yet rate okuma, tried plenty of their products they just dont seem quality.

Same thoughts. If a forum member had said they'd had/have one from new and it was manual, I'd have kept it. As it is, I've sent it back recorded delivery, for a full refund.

I'll give the new shop bought Okuma the benefit of the doubt untill I've used it. If I get back into the fishing as I hope to, then I may invest in the Penn's or Daiwa's in the new year.

So, once again every one, many thanks! And if you see a guy on the beach at Seaham, The Blast or Hawthorn Hive, shouting and swaering at his b@*%ard Okuma Magnetix, say Hi, as it'll probably be me. :-)

Okuma magnetix - (MG) - 30 or 20 - gold sideplates and black graphite cage and black plastic lever for spool engage/disengage lever.(manually!!)

The latest version of the Okuma 'Magnetix' has two significant differences.

Okuma magnetic systems (MS) - 30 or 20 - silver sideplates and machined alloy one piece cage and metal lever for spool engage/disengage lever - but, as in a lot of premium reels you can engage spool by turning the handle.

The problem is that due to the size of the 'power handle' it has a tendancy to move during casting and engage the spool mid-cast!!! unlike lighter handles on the likes of ABU 6500's , 9000c's etc. Not good!!!!! Modifying them to remove the 'auto-engage' is an option. Okuma must have field tested this and found that out for themeselves surely but answers are hard to come by.

My Okuma 20 is a manual engage. The original (earlier) models in the range were all manual engage.

I didn't know they'd brought out an auto engage model !

Very true about the power handle I put a Shimano power handle (unbalanced) on one of my 6500 as I had one spare. One session fishing was enough after three crack offs. Early ABU's re-engauged after a quarter turn the reel (they tiny handles). Once they put bigger handles on it takes a half turn to engaged.

I've got a 20 and a 30 that I got from Rutherfords over 2 years ago and they are both manual. If you are after a reel he might have some Greys Gmag 6 left he was selling them for £50.
