outboard engine help

hi gents

i hav a johnson 20hp outboard engine which wont stay in forward(keeps jumping out) but neutral and rev are fine it doesnt jump out.ive had alittle play bout wiv the cables but its still the same if a put it in forward and keep my hand on it the forward works fine but as soon as i take my hand off it jumps out again has anybody had the same problem before??? any advice would be great cheers

down the bottom of the leg, above the gearbox should be a small cover plate couple of inch long or so. remove that. there should be a steel rod in there connected to a metal boss. check the nuts on that are holding the top and bottom rods are tight

might be worth cracking the nuts slightly, put it into forward and then tighten them back up

Its sounds like a worn clutch dog and forward gear to me,how long has it been standing,was it doing it at the end of last season,or has it just happend or has it been disengaging for a while

its happened about 1month ago but ive been asking ppl to hav a look but there are all sayin there hav to much on.i dont no much about the outboards so im knackered really so this was my last chance really to find sum info and hopefully find sumbody willin to hav a look for me and ill pay them if it can be fixed
