Just about to throw my PC out the window...it started going wrong not long after the graphics card died. Since then the media applications seem to be playing up and now it has a tendency of crashing every so often :mad:

Have decided the only course of action is a complete re-boot....but what a fanny on!!:o

I'll have to re-install EVERYTHING i use regularly once I've done it....:eek::(

Has anyone else had their (PC) demons resolved by doing such a drastic thing:question:

I do it regularly - its easier than trying to resolve conflicts. At one time I thought thats what weekends were for:cool:. My laptop re-boots much easier/faster than my pc so I can be back working again in about an hour. I have been over at PC World tonight looking at laptops for the kids. The sales guy thought he was onto a winner - a customer about to buy two laptops when.......one of the twins turned up (he wasnt supposed to be there :() The bloke's face was a picture when we had to walk out the door as though we were just browsing :D. Matt got wrong for being there and I had to buy a ream of paper to explain why I was there

well I guess that's what Sunday is for this weekend

Think I'll dig out all my software discs tomorrow in preparation...

Download some journal articles for your uni course in advance. That way you will be able to read them as you are feeding the discs in - will save you getting bored:p

Touch wood I've never had a problem with mine where I've had to Re-format,if its not broken dont fix it.
A good mate of mine is in the Computer Trade, best advice he gave me was to be careful what you are downloading or installing on your system, even if its off a trusted mate there PC may run like a pile of sh#te and just pass on there problems.I've had a few trivial problems that i did'nt understand how to fix.
Granted there is alot of other issues why you could have problems but most are self inflicted

Do not let children anywhere near your PC.

My monitor is covered in handprints and has "Schnnizzle" spray painted on it. There's a Birdseye potato waffle in the DVD drawer and the mouse sticks to your hand when you pick it up up. There's gowy stuck all over the desk and the bolts have fallen out of the computer chair due to excesive(?) slouching. My screen saver alternates between sparkly playboy logos and stills from "Bumfights". I actually have shortcuts to Trojan horse viruses on my desktop. The hard drives full of pinky and perky gabba ****e and i'm too scared to download porn because they will find it and bribe me up.

DO NOT LET THE KIDS ON

Buy a them unicorn instead, that'll keep them occupied for about 4 miutes. We've stopped giving the kids money for christmas as they are of that age where they much prefer drugs and weapons instead. :yltype:

:D

Couple of things to try before you format and rebuild.

You dont say what version of windows you use.

If still using 98 :( apart from having your head examined you could hit start/run and type "SFC"

This runs a utility that restores any system files that have been corrupted. You will need a 98 disc with service pack two on it to restore the files.

If on XP or vista both have restore and are worth a try at restoring to an earlier date.

Also you mentioned a faulty gfx card. If you installed a new one are you sure you uninstalled all drivers and utilities for the old one. For example with a radeon card there can be 4 different programs to uninstall before you can install the new one.

The graphics properties of a pc are called upon to do absolutely everything on a pc as anything you do affects the screen. This means a pc can crash at any time doing anything if the wrong drivers are installed and it can look like a programme fault when in fact it was the graphics drivers. Also make sure you have the latest drivers.

Sisoft sandra do a nice programme to test performance of individual components and you can get a demo version for nowt.

If you are really brave and computer literate try searching for "EBCD torrent" in google. Its a host of very usefull test items but a lot of them run in dos before windows boots so you do need to know what you are doing. Its a very powerfull disc which for example can find and change any password on your computer to what the operator wants :) It may also be listed as "hirams boot disc" USE WITH CARE YOU CAN DO SERIOUS HARM IF YOU DONT KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING.

Finally if its a specific programme that crashes thing and gives an error message try googling the error code ..it often throws up answers.

PM me if you need further help.

Cheers
Dave

LMAO charlie
I had the same problem. I caught my son out when he downloaded a program on a porn site when he was 14 and it changed my homepage to some russian tart naked offering to marry me, which greeted me next time i logged on.

Thing is I well remember the day at 15 when he came home from school and when asked "had a good day?"...he replied " yeah ...great day...we hacked the school network and changed all the reports for the year 3's!"

I know do all my "work" on my laptop which is to the best of my abilitiy "son proof"...if my previous posts worry you at all regarding the security of your pc, one of the best defences is to change your bios setting to not allow a boot from cd as an option and pw the bios settings, which is not necessary with xp or vista. Its not foolproof but means someone would need to dismantle the pc to change it back.

Never forget ...nothing in life is free...those free smilies...that cool screensaver...that cute new mouse pointer ...that toolbar add on ...they all cost you...sometimes only in terms of speed of the pc but more often than not they spy on you and cause pop ups etc. One of the worst offenders for this is "free adware" programmes...they are as bad as what they claim to get rid of.

A good way to clean up a pc is to use "trend micro homecall"...because it is an online scanner it catches out those programmes that fool your bought antivirus that they are legit by not being on your hard drive.

DO NOT LET KIDS USE YOUR COMPUTER

Dave I dig your groove but it's easy to beat a child upside the head than get involved in all that BIOS mallarkey. They've got mobile phones that can cook you breakfast ffs :o

....but most are self inflicted

LOL...think that's the problem....Have decided that re-boot is the only way to go.

Busy moving files onto flash drive at the moment in preparation, then I'll dig all key software discs out and the re-boot stuff in preparation.

May even take a leaf out of Ali's book and get some Uni reading to hand ....or I could always make some traces LOL ;):D

my mate uses linux he says when you have computer running the way you want it you make disc with everything on and if anything goes wrong in future and you have to reformat you just put disc in that you have made and takes about quater of an hour to have things back up and running again. prob with windows is i think if you have spyware etc if you reformat you do not neccesarily remove them they can be hid in files etc problems problems problems no questions please as i know little about computers this is just what i heard

Ad-Aware 2007 Free - Lavasoft probs is a so many day trial version ,and when u do a scan it will find spyware ,but wont let you fix them till you upgrade to full version £££

friend of mine uses nod32 there is a one month trial offer with this. kapersky has just had a 6month free offer on but you are right codseeker some of these offers wont get rid of prob some say there are prob just so you buy it if you know what i mean. i think i read somewere best to reformat computer in safe mode whatever that means

well if there is sommit on my pc(virus,s etc) that wont get rid of and ,maybe it aint been formatted in ages ,i just backup everything i need onto disk , put windas cd in ,press any key to boot from cd , there ya gan ,format the whole harddrive fresh instalation of xp or whatever, dont take long couple hours the time ya get ya drivers etc in ,the windows updates can wait till later ,just get everything up and running first, ive notice without the updates the pc seems to log on and off faster ,till the updates are in not too sure .
