some anglers ask for peelers in the tackle shops and think they can fish with them as they are peelers but they are proper peelers when they are at the splitting, cracking stage as they are easier to peel ,hence the name poppers and splitters so when you buy some either buy in advance so you can bring them on or ask for the above or possibly a mixture if not a little toffee hammer or sinker to tap and crack the shell to peel it off like a hard boiled egg as for bringing them on you could tank them with a ariater pump but they can peel quick if you do,nt keep an eye on them or put them in a cat litter tray and a inch of water out of the fridge in a coolish place and watch them this way works fine for me but thier other ways aswell hope this helps

not much or they will drow nd

I've never laughed harder in my life. How the hell are they gonna drown... they live and breath in the sea/river. If crabs couldn't do that they would all be dead and extinct now.

Peeler crabs drowning... sounds about as likely as buying a can of tarten paint!:D:D

I suggest you cover your crabs in water and leave them for a day or 2 without an areated pump and see what happens.

Andy mate, the lads right, without a air pump the crab remove the oxygen from the water and drown, kept in a little sea water the crab will keep there lungs wet and take oxygen through them, like the lad said put a few crab in a bucket of sea water next day they will be dead ...

I'm sure that crabs create a air bubble system in there shell using gills.. Like a scuba tank..... De oxygenated water will be like drowning... lol, I also laughed Andy.... ;-) Always fun to get what's given ;-) O/J

still got a lot tol learn andrew,, listen to experienced anglers

Codonly. I've heard you cover yours in your Y fronts and wear them for a few months. Mind you, even with all them stuffed down there, your meat and two veg are quite safe as even peelers have taste.

Fully submerge the crab and you will need a air pump or they will drown / suffocate without oxygen in the water just like fish.

Half submerge the crab and use a damp cloth the crab use moisture from inside the body to keep the gills wet as and can breath the oxygen from the air.

Hence they can live in and out the water !.

Had a crab lesson this morning, whilst getting my WR300 tarted up :)

just keep them cool and keep them clean by changing the water every day.

I notice that they peel quicker when they are covered up and each crab has adequate space.

i prefer a damp rag over them with No water but i give them a drink now and again.

a tip- make sure the rag is CLEAN. the water will even bring out remaining washing powder and before you know it it will kill some of the crabs.;)

another tip- dint tell your lass

I DO USE A PUMP 4 MY CRAB, end of. But you could fill a fish tank with fresh seawater and airate it, at least 15 to 20h or more crabs would be happy, just make sure to change the water regularly.
